Short pulses propagation in multilevel atomic media

Abstract

We investigate short pulses propagation through multilevel atomic vapors. The medium is composed of an ensemble of four atomic levels generated by the hyperfine structure of the D1 transition in Rubidium-87 atoms. The pulses are resonant to their respective optical transitions, in order to have a well-defined pulse area definition. We discuss local stabilization of the pulse area with or without energy stabilization and as a function of the prolonged distance. Furthermore, we explore some new features for the propagation dynamics in multilevel atomic media which are beyond the traditional framework of McCall and Hahn area theorem and self-induced transparency.

Entropy Associated with Local Stabilization of the Pulse Area in Multilevel Atomic Media

Abu Mohamed Alhasan

This paper provides an entropy analysis to resonant and short pulses propagation in four-level atomic medium. As an example, we take D1 transition in rubidium 87 Rb atoms including hyperfine structure. We show how to construct the time dependent Bloch-metric for each optical transition in the Liouville space.Furthermore, we attempt to relate local stabilization of the pulse area to the distribution of the space-entropy.

Distortionless optical pulse propagation in a three-level medium

Joseph Hayden Higginbotham, Robert T. Deck, D. G. Ellis

We report on computer-generated solutions to the coupled matter-field equations which provide the first evidence for distortionless optical pulse propagation in an absorbing medium of three-level atoms. The associated phenomenon represents the three-level equivalent of self-induced transparency in two-level atoms. Results have application to the propagation of short, coherent optical pulses in a medium in which the atoms have two distinct transition frequencies in near resonance with the pulse carrier frequency. We relate in particular to the case of pulse propagation in a magnetically perturbed sodium vapor where the pulse carrier frequency is tuned near the frequencies of the well-known sodium $D$ lines. Here we obtain particular solutions corresponding to three and five peak pulses with "areas" of approximately $6\ensuremath{\pi}$ and $10\ensuremath{\pi}$, respectively. The solutions are strongly supported by a number of analytical results. In particular, simple algebraic relations are found which give the populations of the levels in terms of the field variables.

Coherent pulse propagation and self-induced transparency on degenerate transitions in atomic iodine

Gan Xu, Terence A. King

Coherent propagation of intense short laser pulses through degenerate absorbing media is investigated with the use of an atomic-iodine laser-absorber self-resonant combination. Four degenerate systems, the $^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{-}^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$, $F=3\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=4$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}{M}_{F}=0,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ and $F=2\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=2$, $\ensuremath{\Delta}{M}_{F}=0,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ transitions, are studied under various conditions. Theoretical analysis based on the "pulse-area---pulse-energy" approach shows different pulse propagation behaviors for three typical types of degeneracy. Experimental results give good agreement with theoretical predictions. It is concluded that self-induced transparency exists in any degenerate two-level system, provided that suitable polarization of radiation is used. The usefulness of self-induced-transparency phenomena for measurements of transitional dipole moment and homogeneous relaxation time is also demonstrated.

Self-induced transparency in self-chirped media

Carlos R. Stroud, C. M. Bowden, L. Allen

Resonant absorbing media having many atoms within a cubic resonance wavelength can exhibit large frequency chirps in pulse propagation due to dipole-dipole interactions among the atoms. Analytic solutions are obtained for invariant pulse propagation in such a medium consisting of interacting two-level atoms. Departures from the McCall-Hahn results include nonhyperbolic secant pulse shapes and different than 2π-area pulses. In addition, the excitation of the medium is comparatively suppressed for the same group velocity. The results are interpreted to suggest new experiments.

Nonlinear regimes of propagation of resonant pulses in multilevel quantum media

С. В. Сазонов

An approximate operator approach that is equivalent to the mathematical Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method and allows one to solve the set of constitutive equations for an N -level quantum medium resonantly interacting with multifrequency optical pulses is proposed. The transitions occurring via a common level with the ordinal number j are considered in detail. It is shown that, for j =1, the self-induced transparency regime is realized, whereas, at j=N , the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency is realized. Within the framework of the WKB approximation, an expression that represents the area theorem for multifrequency resonant pulses is derived.

Adiabatic Transparency of Multilevel Atomic Media for Short High-intensity Pulses

G. G. Grigoryan, V. O. Chaltykyan, E. A. Gazazyan +2 more

We consider a medium of multilevel atomic systems interacting with radiation pulses. A relatively simple technique of analytic calculations is proposed, which allows revealing all necessary conditions (with sufficient conditions to be checked separately) imposed on the interaction parameters, for which the mean dipole moment of a multilevel atomic medium vanishes, i.e., the medium becomes transparent via adiabatic interaction. The proposed technique is based on the method of quasienergies and illustrated for three- and five-level atomic systems. The necessary conditions for the propagation length where the interaction adiabaticity is preserved in the medium are obtained.
