An analog of magnetic oscillations for neutral atoms with induced electric dipole

Abstract

We show that the analog of de Haas–van Alphen effect (adHvA) can be generated in a two-dimensional (2D) atomic gas by the interaction between an induced electric dipole and an electromagnetic field. When the neutral atoms move in a properly designed field configuration, we have a quantization similar to the Landau levels. The effective magnetic field dependence of the oscillation amplitude of the the energy and the analog magnetization of the atomic cloud are studied. We also estimate the area of the Fermi circle of the atomic gas.

Magnetic oscillations for neutral atoms subject to an electromagnetic field

B. Farias, Claudio Furtado

We show that the de Haas van Alphen effect can be induced in a two dimensional atomic gas by the He-McKellar-Wilkens interaction mediated via an electric dipole moment. Under an appropriate field-dipole configuration, we show that the neutral atoms subject to a synthetic magnetic field arrange themselves in Landau levels. An experimental arrangement for observation of the atomic analog of dHvA oscillations is proposed. In a strong effective magnetic field regime we present the quantum oscillations in the energy and effective magnetization of the two dimensional atomic gas. From the dHvA period we determine the area of the Fermi circle of the atomic cloud.

Oscillation of Pauli Paramagnetism in Rotating Two-Component Fermionic Atom Gases

Beibing Huang, Shaolong Wan

By rotating two-component fermionic atom gases in uniform magnetic field, a similar physical situation with de Haas-van Alphen effect is constructed. We calculate magnetic moment of the system and find that owing to an existence of effective magnetic field coming from the rotation, the magnetic moment also shows the oscillatory behavior about magnetic field, but it is completely different from the famous oscillation of de Haas-van Alphen effect. This distinction is due to that in the atomic gases the orbital motion of atom only couples to rotation and does not contribute to magnetic moment in the light of atomic charge neutrality.

Analog of landau Levels to Electric Dipole

Leandro Rodrigo Ribeiro, Claudio Furtado, Jose Roberto Nascimento

In this article we discuss the analogy between the dynamics of a neutral particle with an electric dipole, in the presence of configuration of magnetic field, with Landau level quantization for charged particle. We analyze this quantization based on the He-Mckelar-Wilkens interaction developed of similar way that Ericsson and Sj\\"oqvist[Phys Rev. A {\\bf 65} 013607 (2001)] was analyzed the Landau-Aharonov-Casher effect. The energy level and eingenfuctions and eigenvalues are obtained.

Artificial magnetism for a harmonically trapped Fermi gas in a synthetic magnetic field

Shyamal Biswas, Avijit Ghosh, Soumyadeep Majumder

We have analytically explored the artificial magnetism for a 3D spin-polarized harmonically trapped ideal Fermi gas of electrically neutral particles exposed to a uniform synthetic magnetic field. Though polarization of the spin is necessary for trapping electrically neutral atoms in a magneto-optical trap, Pauli paramagnetism can not be studied for the spin-polarized Fermi system. However, it is possible to study Landau diamagnetism and de Haas-van Alphen effect for such a system. We have unified the artificial Landau diamagnetism and the artificial de Haas-van Alphen effect in a single framework for all temperatures as well as for all possible magnitudes of the synthetic magnetic field in the thermodynamic limit. Our prediction is testable in the present-day experimental setup for ultracold fermionic atoms in magneto-optical trap.

Quantização de Landau para partículas neutras emanéis quânticos

Lincoanderson Oliveira Dantas

In this work, we shall show that a Landau quantization analog is possible for neutral particles in two-dimensional quantum rings. For that we have used the Tan Inkson model for a quantum ring to confine neutral atoms in the ring. We have also used two different fields configurations to induce a electric dipole moment on the particle. In addition, we have made a review of some quantum effects, such that Aharonov-Bohm like effects and Landau quantization for neutral and charged particles.

Slow Light in Degenerate Fermi Gases

Gediminas Juzeliūnas, Patrik Öhberg

We investigate the effect of slow light propagating in a degenerate atomic Fermi gas. In particular we use slow light with an orbital angular momentum. We present a microscopic theory for the interplay between light and matter and show how the slow light can provide an effective magnetic field acting on the electrically neutral fermions, a direct analogy of the free electron gas in an uniform magnetic field. As an example we illustrate how the corresponding de Haas-van Alphen effect can be seen in a gas of neutral atomic fermions.
