Abstract

We study different dressing effects in parametrically amplified four-wave mixing (PA-FWM) processes. By seeding a weak probe laser into the Stokes or anti-Stokes channel of the FWM, the gain process is generated in the so-called bright twin beams which are the probe and conjugate beams. The dressing types dramatically affect the gain factors in both the probe and conjugate channels. The gain factor of the FWM signal decreases under the cascade-type dressing and the signal's shape splits into two dips under this dressing type. However, the intensity of the FWM signal changes from suppression to enhancement under the parallel-type dressing. We will apply this switching process to all-optical switching.

Dressed Gain from the Parametrically Amplified Four-Wave Mixing Process in an Atomic Vapor

Zhaoyang Zhang, Feng Wen, Junling Che +4 more

With a forward cone emitting from the strong pump laser in a thermal rubidium atomic vapor, we investigate the non-degenerate parametrically amplified four-wave mixing (PA-FWM) process with dressing effects in a three-level "double-Λ" configuration both theoretically and experimentally. By seeding a weak probe field into the Stokes or anti-Stokes channel of the FWM, the gain processes are generated in the bright twin beams which are called conjugate and probe beams, respectively. However, the strong dressing effect of the pump beam will dramatically affect the gain factors both in the probe and conjugate channels, and can inevitably impose an influence on the quantum effects such as entangled degree and the quantum noise reduction between the two channels. We systematically investigate the intensity evolution of the dressed gain processes by manipulating the atomic density, the Rabi frequency and the frequency detuning. Such dressing effects are also visually evidenced by the observation of Autler-Townes splitting of the gain peaks. The investigation can contribute to the development of quantum information processing and quantum communications.

Enhancement and suppression of spatial splitting four-wave mixing in atomic medium

Yuming Zhuang, Suling Sang, Peiying Li +6 more

We experimentally report on the evolution from singly-dressed to doubly-dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) process by controlling the powers of the probe, the pump and the dressing fields respectively. The differences in the enhancement and the suppression of FWM signal between the two-level and cascade three-level atomic systems are observed and explained by the multi-dressed effect theoretically. Both the x direction and the y direction spatial splittings of the degenerate-FWM (DWFM) beams are obtained. We also investigate the switch between the enhancement and the suppression of the DWFM signals and between its spatial splittings in x direction and y direction. The spatial splittings in x direction and y direction can be controlled by the relative position and the intensity of the involved laser beams. Such a study can be useful for optimizing the efficiency of the FWM process and providing potential applications in spatial signal processing.

Observation of Angle Switching of Dressed Four-Wave Mixing Image

Suling Sang, Zhenkun Wu, Jia Sun +4 more

We experimentally report that angle-control dynamics in the nonlinear propagation of the images of the probe, generated four-wave mixing (FWM) and fluorescence signals beams in FWM process in a cascade three-level, as well as a two-level atomic systems. It is shown that, by changing the angles between pumping fields and dressing fields, respectively, the characteristics of the measured signals including the spectra intensity and spatial images can be controlled to display many effects, including the electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption (EIT and EIA, respectively) and Autler-Townes splitting. In particular, we demonstrate the angle-controlled switching from EIA to EIT in probe transmission or from enhancement to suppression in FWM signal. Additionally, we also illustrate the interaction between spatial characteristics and spectra intensities of weak fields. The studies can be very useful in producing all optical-signal-processing devices, such as spatial beam splitters, routers, and switches.

Eight-wave mixing parametrical amplification

Yang Liu, Kangkang Li, Yize Liu +3 more

We investigate parametrically amplified eight-wave mixing (PA-EWM). The double dressed PA-four-wave mixing (PA-FWM) is the superposition of one PA-FWM process, two different PA-six-wave mixing (PA-SWM) processes (PA-SWM1 and PA-SWM2 with external dressing field 776nm and 795nm, respectively) and one PA-EWM process. When the phases among FWM, SWM1, SWM2 and EWM change from 0 to π, the double dressed PA-FWM could gradually satisfy the pure enhancement (all 0), partial enhancement and suppression (mixture of 0 and π), or pure suppression condition (all π). The outcomes of the investigation can potentially contribute to the development of multi-channel quantum information processing and high dimensional stereoscopic imaging.

Switching enhancement and suppression of four-wave mixing via a dressing field

Zhiguo Wang, Yanpeng Zhang, Huaibin Zheng +3 more

The switch between the enhancement and suppression of the four-wave mixing (FWM) process in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window via quantum interference has been demonstrated experimentally. The enhancement and suppression of the FWM signal, as well as the EIT window, switch with a change in the probe detuning. Also, by controlling the powers of the dressing and probe fields, the enhancement and suppression of the FWM signal can be switched and an optimized enhancement can be obtained. Such a switch of the enhancement and suppression of the FWM signal intensity can find potential applications in optical switches, optical communication and quantum information processes.

Parametric amplification of dressed multi-wave mixing in an atomic ensemble

H-T Chen, M Z Qin, Yi‐Qi Zhang +4 more

We theoretically investigate the influence of a dressing field on parametric amplification multi-wave mixing (PA-MWM) processes in an atomic ensemble for the first time. The quantum spatial properties of PA-MWM signals are demonstrated by studying the cone emissions. Meanwhile, we investigate the intensities, the intensity difference squeezing, and the intensity noise correlation of bright twin PA-MWM beams, which are generated by injecting the MWM signals into the input ports of a spontaneous parametric four-wave mixing process. Both the spatial properties and the quantum correlation can be enhanced or suppressed via a bright state or a dark state, which is induced by the single or double dressing effect. This study has potential applications in quantum security, quantum imaging and long distance quantum communications.
