Abstract

The switch between the enhancement and suppression of the four-wave mixing (FWM) process in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window via quantum interference has been demonstrated experimentally. The enhancement and suppression of the FWM signal, as well as the EIT window, switch with a change in the probe detuning. Also, by controlling the powers of the dressing and probe fields, the enhancement and suppression of the FWM signal can be switched and an optimized enhancement can be obtained. Such a switch of the enhancement and suppression of the FWM signal intensity can find potential applications in optical switches, optical communication and quantum information processes.

Multidressing interaction of four-wave mixing image in three-level atomic system

Suling Sang, Huaibin Zheng, Zhiguo Wang +5 more

We demonstrate different dressed processes of four-wave mixing (FWM), as changing the powers of the probe, pump, and dressing fields, respectively, in ladder-type three-level system. It is demonstrated that scanning detuning of the dressing field can lead to the direct detection of the dressing effects and the interaction between the dressing fields, compared with scanning that of the probe field. Moreover, by respectively controlling the powers of the dressing, pump, and probe fields, the enhancement and suppression of FWM signals can be switched sensitively. Meanwhile, the spatial splitting in y direction of FWM signal due to the cross-phase modulation and electromagnetically induced gratings is observed, respectively. Such nonlinear signal with switchable enhancement has potential applications in optical switching, optical communication, and quantum information processing.

Observation of Angle Switching of Dressed Four-Wave Mixing Image

Suling Sang, Zhenkun Wu, Jia Sun +4 more

We experimentally report that angle-control dynamics in the nonlinear propagation of the images of the probe, generated four-wave mixing (FWM) and fluorescence signals beams in FWM process in a cascade three-level, as well as a two-level atomic systems. It is shown that, by changing the angles between pumping fields and dressing fields, respectively, the characteristics of the measured signals including the spectra intensity and spatial images can be controlled to display many effects, including the electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption (EIT and EIA, respectively) and Autler-Townes splitting. In particular, we demonstrate the angle-controlled switching from EIA to EIT in probe transmission or from enhancement to suppression in FWM signal. Additionally, we also illustrate the interaction between spatial characteristics and spectra intensities of weak fields. The studies can be very useful in producing all optical-signal-processing devices, such as spatial beam splitters, routers, and switches.

Enhancing and suppressing four‐wave mixing in electromagnetically induced transparency window

Zhiqiang Nie, Yanpeng Zhang, Yan Jie Zhao +5 more

Abstract We demonstrate the enhancement and suppression of four‐wave mixing (FWM) in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window in Y‐type 85Rb atomic system. The generated two‐photon FWM signal can be selectively enhanced and suppressed via an EIT window. The EIT of probe as well as the enhancement and suppression of FWM signals can be modified by the sequential‐cascade double dressing. The influence of different probe polarization configurations is also studied. Different polarization states of the probe laser can select different transitions among Zeeman sublevels and different dressing strengths. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Controlling Rydberg-dressed four-wave mixing via dual electromagnetically induced transparency windows

Zhaoyang Zhang, Haijun Tang, Irfan Ahmed +4 more

Rydberg-dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated with two electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows generated in a Y-type Rb85 atomic configuration. Such dressing effect related to Rydberg states can lead to enhancement and suppression in the FWM process, which can be manipulated by the frequency detuning, Rabi frequency, and polarization of laser fields. Particularly, with the enhancement condition satisfied, coexisting FWM and Rydberg six-wave mixing (SWM) peaks with ultranarrow linewidth (much less than 30 MHz) are simultaneously observed. The controllable enhancement and suppression in a Rydberg-EIT medium can provide a novel nondestructive nonlinear method to investigate the spectrum involving Rydberg excitation in the atomic ensemble above room temperature.

Power quantum control of odd-order multiwave mixing in an electromagnetically induced transparency window

Huaibin Zheng, Ning Li, Zhaoyang Zhang +4 more

We investigate the power control behavior of odd-order multiwave mixing in an electromagnetically induced transparency window. We successfully obtain the evolution from pure enhancement (bright state), half-enhancement, and half-suppression, to pure suppression (dark state) in a four-wave mixing (FWM) channel. The correlations of two bright and two dark states of FWM are studied under four different kinds of power configurations. Moreover, the power-controlled quantum interference among multiple dark states is also studied in FWM and six-wave mixing channels. Such selective switching among multiple frequency channels could have potential applications in optical switching, optical communication, and quantum information processing.

Enhancement and suppression of spatial splitting four-wave mixing in atomic medium

Yuming Zhuang, Suling Sang, Peiying Li +6 more

We experimentally report on the evolution from singly-dressed to doubly-dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) process by controlling the powers of the probe, the pump and the dressing fields respectively. The differences in the enhancement and the suppression of FWM signal between the two-level and cascade three-level atomic systems are observed and explained by the multi-dressed effect theoretically. Both the x direction and the y direction spatial splittings of the degenerate-FWM (DWFM) beams are obtained. We also investigate the switch between the enhancement and the suppression of the DWFM signals and between its spatial splittings in x direction and y direction. The spatial splittings in x direction and y direction can be controlled by the relative position and the intensity of the involved laser beams. Such a study can be useful for optimizing the efficiency of the FWM process and providing potential applications in spatial signal processing.
