Adiabatic Fock-state-generation scheme using Kerr nonlinearity

We propose a theoretical scheme to deterministically generate Fock states in a Kerr cavity through adiabatic variation of the driving field strength and the cavity detuning. We show that the required time to generate an $n$-photon Fock state scales as the square root of $n$. Requirements for the Kerr coefficient relative to the system decoherence rate are provided as a function of desired state fidelity, indicating that the scheme is potentially realizable with the present state of the art in microwave superconducting circuits.

Fock State Generation From the Nonlinear Kerr Medium

W. Leoński, R. Tanaś

We discuss a system comprising a nonlinear Kerr medium in a cavity driven by an external coherent field directly or through the parametric process. We assume that the system is initially in the vacuum state, and we show that under appropriate conditions, i.e., properly chosen detuning and intensity of the driving field, the one or two-photon Fock states of the electromagnetic field can be achieved.

Generation of large Fock states from coherent states using Kerr interaction and displacement

Nilakantha Meher, Anirban Pathak, S. Sivakumar

We discuss a scheme to generate large Fock states. The scheme involves repeatedly applying an experimentally feasible unitary transformation to convert a semiclassical state into a Fock state. The transformation combines Kerr interaction, which is a non-Gaussian operation, and pulsed coherent drives. We identify suitable parameter values (Kerr strength, pulse timings, displacement amplitude) for the physical processes to implement the transformation and generate large Fock states with near-unity fidelity. The feasibility of implementing the scheme in circuit QED architectures is discussed. The method is also suitable for generating Fock states of cavity fields.

Deterministic optical Fock-state generation

Kenneth R. Brown, Keshav M. Dani, Dan Stamper-Kurn +1 more

We present a scheme for the deterministic generation of N-photon Fock states from N three-level atoms in a high-finesse optical cavity. The method applies an external laser pulse that generates an N-photon output state while adiabatically keeping the atom-cavity system within a subspace of optically dark states. We present analytical estimates of the error due to amplitude leakage from these dark states for general N, and compare it with explicit results of numerical simulations for $N<~5.$ The method is shown to provide a robust source of N-photon states under a variety of experimental conditions and is suitable for experimental implementation using a cloud of cold atoms magnetically trapped in a cavity. The resulting N-photon states have potential applications in fundamental studies of nonclassical states and in quantum information processing.

Preparation of photonic Fock state using bichromatic adiabatic passage under dissipative environment

Qizhe Hou, Wanli Yang, Mang Feng +1 more

We propose a potentially practical scheme for generating the controllable photonic Fock state in a cavity by using the bichromatic adiabatic passage technique in the atom–cavity–laser system under dissipative environment. By numerically simulating the quantum dynamics of the whole system, we demonstrate quantitatively that the maximal probabilities of the Fock state can be achieved by elaborately adjusting the peak amplitudes of the laser’s Rabi frequency and the detuning between the laser frequency and the atomic transition frequency. In addition, we have also shown that the atomic and cavity dissipations play different roles in the preparation of the Fock state inside the cavity. The experimental feasibility and challenge are justified using currently available technology.
