Simulation of Quantum Heisenberg Hamiltonians in 1D

Abstract

In this paper, we provide a theoretical analysis of strongly interacting quantum systems confined by a time-dependent external potential in one spatial dimension. We show that such systems can be used to simulate spin chains described by Heisenberg Hamiltonians in which the exchange coupling constants can be manipulated by time-dependent driving of the shape of the external confinement. As illustrative examples, we consider a harmonic trapping potential with a variable frequency and an infinite square well potential with a time-dependent barrier in the middle.

Engineering the dynamics of effective spin-chain models for strongly interacting atomic gases

Artem G. Volosniev, David Petrosyan, Manuel Valiente +3 more

We consider a one-dimensional gas of cold atoms with strong contact interactions and construct an effective spin-chain Hamiltonian for a two-component system. The resulting Heisenberg spin model can be engineered by manipulating the shape of the external confining potential of the atomic gas. We find that bosonic atoms offer more flexibility for independently tuning the parameters of the spin Hamiltonian through interatomic (intraspecies) interaction, which is absent for fermions due to the Pauli exclusion principle. Our formalism can have important implications for control and manipulation of the dynamics of few- and many-body quantum systems; as an illustrative example relevant to quantum computation and communication, we consider state transfer in the simplest nontrivial system of four particles representing exchange-coupled qubits.

Tunable self-assembled spin chains of strongly interacting cold atoms for demonstration of reliable quantum state transfer

N J S Loft, Oleksandr V. Marchukov, David Petrosyan +1 more

We have developed an efficient computational method to treat long, one-dimensional systems of strongly interacting atoms forming self-assembled spin chains. Such systems can be used to realize many spin chain model Hamiltonians tunable by the external confining potential. As a concrete demonstration, we consider quantum state transfer in a Heisenberg spin chain and we show how to determine the confining potential in order to obtain nearly perfect state transfer.

NEW FAMILY OF SOLVABLE 1D HEISENBERG MODELS

Holger Frahm, Vladimir I. Inozemtsev

Starting from a Calogero--Sutherland model with hyperbolic interaction confined by an external field with Morse potential we construct a Heisenberg spin chain with exchange interaction $\propto 1/\sinh^2 x$ on a lattice given in terms of the zeroes of Laguerre polynomials. Varying the strength of the Morse potential the Haldane--Shastry and harmonic spin chains are reproduced. The spectrum of the models in this class is found to be that of a classical one-dimensional Ising chain with nonuniform nearest neighbour coupling in a nonuniform magnetic field which allows to study the thermodynamics in the limit of infinite chains.

New family of solvable 1D Heisenberg models

Starting from a Calogero-Sutherland model with the hyperbolic interaction confined by an external field with Morse potential, we construct a Heisenberg spin chain with exchange interaction varies as 1/sinh 2 x on a lattice given in terms of the zeros of Laguerre polynomials. Varying the strength of the Morse potential, the Haldane-Shastry and harmonic spin chains are reproduced. The spectrum of the models in this class is found to be that of a classical one-dimensional Ising chain with non-uniform nearest-neighbour coupling in a non-uniform magnetic field which allows us to study the thermodynamics in the limit of infinite chains.

Exchange coupling in a one-dimensional Wigner crystal

A. D. Klironomos, R. R. Ramazashvili, К. А. Матвеев

We consider a long quantum wire at low electron densities. In this strong-interaction regime a Wigner crystal may form, in which electrons comprise an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain. The coupling constant $J$ is exponentially small, as it originates from tunneling of two neighboring electrons through the segregating potential barrier. We study this exponential dependence, properly accounting for the many-body effects and the finite width of the wire.
