Abstract

We report a sixfold Purcell broadening of a resonance line of a 87Rb atom, by strongly coupling it to a single-sided fiber-based Fabry-Perot cavity which collects 90% of the enhanced single photon emission.

Strong Purcell Effect on a Neutral Atom Trapped in an Open Fiber Cavity

J. Gallego, Wolfgang Alt, Tobias Macha +3 more

We observe a sixfold Purcell broadening of the D_{2} line of an optically trapped ^{87}Rb atom strongly coupled to a fiber cavity. Under external illumination by a near-resonant laser, up to 90% of the atom's fluorescence is emitted into the resonant cavity mode. The sub-Poissonian statistics of the cavity output and the Purcell enhancement of the atomic decay rate are confirmed by the observation of a strongly narrowed antibunching dip in the photon autocorrelation function. The photon leakage through the higher-transmission mirror of the single-sided resonator is the dominant contribution to the field decay (κ≈2π×50 MHz), thus offering a high-bandwidth, fiber-coupled channel for photonic interfaces such as quantum memories and single-photon sources.

Cavity-induced backaction in Purcell-enhanced photon emission of a single ion in an ultraviolet fiber cavity

T. G. Ballance, Hendrik M. Meyer, Pascal Kobel +3 more

We study the behavior of a single laser-driven trapped ion inside a microscopic optical Fabry-Perot cavity. In particular, we demonstrate a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity operating on the principal ${S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{P}_{1/2}$ electric dipole transition of an ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{+}$ ion at 369 nm with an ion-cavity coupling strength of $g=2\ensuremath{\pi}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}67(1)$ MHz. We employ the cavity to study the generation of single photons and observe cavity-induced backaction in the Purcell-enhanced emission of photons. Tuning of the amplitude and phase between the driving field and the cavity field built up from photons scattered into the cavity mode by the ion allows us to enhance or suppress the total rate of photon emission from the ion-cavity system.

Cavity quantum electrodynamics with a single molecule: Purcell enhancement, strong coupling and single-photon nonlinearity

Daqing Wang

Abstract Control of light–matter coupling at the quantum level is an enabling technique for many emerging quantum technologies. This tutorial describes recent advances in achieving efficient coupling of light with a single molecule using an optical Fabry–Perot microcavity. We demonstrate that the efficient cavity-molecule coupling converts the molecule to an effective two-level system. In this regime, a single molecule can act as a nearly perfect reflecting mirror and exhibits optical nonlinearity at the ultimate level of single photons.

By appropriately structuring the optical field of a 40-nm-bandwidth single-photon wave packet, we couple the photon into a 150-pm-linewidth planar Fabry-Pérot cavity with 22-nm free-spectral-range, thereby demonstrating for the first time single-photon omni-resonance.

Strong Coupling between a Trapped Single Atom and an All-Fiber Cavity

Shinya Kato, Takao Aoki

We demonstrate an all-fiber cavity quantum electrodynamics system with a trapped single atom in the strong coupling regime. We use a nanofiber Fabry-Perot cavity, that is, an optical nanofiber sandwiched by two fiber-Bragg-grating mirrors. Measurements of the cavity transmission spectrum with a single atom in a state-insensitive nanofiber trap clearly reveal the vacuum Rabi splitting.
