Abstract

We demonstrate cooperative coupling between hot vapors and surface plasmons with three-fold Purcell factor enhancement. Our result can be regarded as a major step in the quest for room temperature quantum plasmonics with atomic media.

Plasmon-atom coupling for suppression of spontaneous emission

Zhijie Deng, Chang‐Seok Shin, Philip Hemmer

Enhancement and suppression of spontaneous emission is vital to both quantum optics research and optoelectronics industry. Surface plasmon has been known to feature such characteristics. Waveguide-coupled-atom systems are studied for this goal. The enhancement is proportional to a field focusing factor and inverse to the group velocity along the waveguide. Comparison is made to the Purcell factor. A numerical example shows a promising structure with a grating-coupled plasmonic waveguide, projecting an emission enhancement by 51 times in spite of heat dissipation.

Cooperative emission in quantum plasmonic superradiance

H. Varguet, S. Guérin, Hans Rudolf Jauslin +1 more

Plasmonic superradiance originates from the plasmon mediated strong correlation that builds up between dipolar emitters coupled to a metal nanoparticle. This leads to a fast burst of emission so that plasmonic superradiance constitutes ultrafast and extremely bright optical nanosources of strong interest for integrated quantum nano-optics platforms. We elucidate the superradiance effect by establishing the dynamics of the system, including all features such as the orientation of the dipoles, their distance to the particle, and the number of active plasmon modes. We determine an optimal configuration for Purcell enhanced superradiance. We also show superradiance blockade at small distances.
