Measurement of the spectral reflectivity of a self-pumped phase conjugator

D. A. Noraev, Patrick Lambelet, Jack Feinberg

We measure the spectral reflectivity of a Cat (so named because its first conjugated image was that of a cat) self-pumped conjugator. We find that the transmission and the phase-conjugate reflectivity of the conjugator always vary periodically with wavelength and that the periodicity is caused by a resonator loop that springs up and self-adjusts inside the crystal. Depending on the spectral width of the incident beam, the conjugator will have either a minimum or a maximum reflectivity at the center of the writing spectrum. We show that the sign of the coherence function after one round trip of the internal resonator determines the spectral behavior of the conjugator, and we experimentally map out the dependence of the conjugator’s reflectivity and transmission on the spectral content of the incident beam.

Phase conjugation at intracavity degenerate four-wave mixing of frequency-selective pulsed CO laser radiation

А. А. Ионин, А. А. Котков, A K Kurnosov +2 more

Energetic, temporal and spectral characteristics of the process of phase conjugation (PC) at intracavity degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) of frequency selective pulsed e-beam controlled discharge CO laser radiation have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Maximum PC reflectivity (PCR) on energy comes up to 1.5% being independent of specific input energy. The dependencies of PCR on energy have quite different behavior for various selected spectral lines. An influence of lasing and PC process in adjacent vibrational bands on PCR for the selected spectral line has been experimentally demonstrated, PCR decreasing at switching on adjacent vibrational bands. The numerical model has been formulated to simulate the temporal behavior of PC process on large scale gain (amplitude) and refraction (phase) gratings formed in the active medium of CO laser. The trend in the calculated temporal behavior of PCR is the same as for the experimental result, the theoretical PCR being higher as compared to experimental one. The resonance (amplitude) mechanism of PC process seems to be a prevailing one for DFWM of CO laser radiation.

Single-beam phase conjugation for lasers phase locking and image formation

Nickolai V. Kukhtarev, Tatiana V. Kukhtareva, Michael J. Curley +2 more

Single-beam phase conjugation (self-phase conjugation, or SPC) was observed in the ferroelectric crystal LiNbO3:Fe using CW HeNe laser (wavelength 632 nm power 10-36 mW). Effective "out/in" reflection coefficient of phase conjugation (defined as the ratio the output phase-conjugated beam to the input laser beam measured before optical elements) was about 30%. For some crystals efficient phase conjugation was followed by the simultaneous generation of Fabry-Perot modes. Phase locking of two HeNe lasers and imaging of the amplitude objects with the help of self-phase conjugation was demonstrated. Appearances of additional beams (in transmission and reflection) have some analogy with the predicted behavior of the "negative-index materials".
