Quantum magnetism of bosons with synthetic gauge fields in one-dimensional optical lattices: A density-matrix renormalization-group study

Marie Piraud, Zi Cai, Ian P. McCulloch +1 more

In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of the quantum magnetism in the Mott insulating phases of the one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Hubbard model with Abelian or non-Abelian synthetic gauge fields, using the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. We focus on the interplay between the synthetic gauge field and the asymmetry of the interactions, which give rise to a very general effective magnetic model: an XYZ model with various Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. The properties of the different quantum magnetic phases and phases transitions of this model are investigated.

Geometric frustration assisted kinetic ferromagnetism in doped Mott insulators

Qianqian Chen, Shuai A. Chen, Zheng Zhu

Understanding ferromagnetism mechanism in doped Mott insulators on frustrated lattices remains challenging at intermediate coupling and finite doping. Here, we study the itinerant ferromagnetism and propose its mechanism in doped Mott insulators on a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and unrestricted Hartree–Fock mean-field methods, we reveal that itinerant ferromagnetism appears at intermediate coupling (10 ≲ U ≪ ∞) near 50% electron doping in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model. By analyzing all microscopic hopping processes, we find that doublon-singlon exchange alone drives the fully polarized ferromagnetism and uncovers the particle-hole asymmetry. We also establish the magnetic phase diagram and compare local spin correlations with recent experiments. Random phase approximation and DMRG calculations consistently confirm that the ferromagnetism persists when SU(2) symmetry is explicitly broken by magnetic anisotropy. These results clarify a microscopic route to itinerant ferromagnetism at intermediate coupling and finite doping in doped Mott insulators. Understanding the mechanism of ferromagnetism in strongly correlated systems is an ongoing theoretical challenge and the Hubbard model is typically adopted to investigate such systems. Here, the authors numerically investigate the doped triangular Fermi-Hubbard model and show ferromagnetism at intermediate coupling and finite doping, which results from the interplay of kinetic doublon-singlon exchange and lattice geometry.

Chiral Spin Liquid Phase of the Triangular Lattice Hubbard Model: A Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study

Aaron Szasz, Johannes Motruk, Michael P. Zaletel +1 more

Motivated by experimental studies that have found signatures of a quantum spin liquid phase in organic crystals whose structure is well described by the two-dimensional triangular lattice, we study the Hubbard model on this lattice at half filling using the infinite-system density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) method. On infinite cylinders with finite circumference, we identify an intermediate phase between observed metallic behavior at low interaction strength and Mott insulating spin-ordered behavior at strong interactions. Chiral ordering from spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry, a fractionally quantized spin Hall response, and characteristic level statistics in the entanglement spectrum in the intermediate phase provide strong evidence for the existence of a chiral spin liquid in the full two-dimensional limit of the model.
