Abstract

In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of the quantum magnetism in the Mott insulating phases of the one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Hubbard model with Abelian or non-Abelian synthetic gauge fields, using the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. We focus on the interplay between the synthetic gauge field and the asymmetry of the interactions, which give rise to a very general effective magnetic model: an XYZ model with various Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. The properties of the different quantum magnetic phases and phases transitions of this model are investigated.

Effective spin models for spinor lattice gases with gauge fields

Tongyue Sun, Yi Zheng, Shi-Jie Yang +1 more

We study the effective spin models for a Mott insulating Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of gauge fields. We first introduce a simple method based on adiabatic elimination to determine the low-energy effective Hamiltonian. Demonstration of a two-component one-dimensional model with synthetic magnetic field is shown. We further consider a generalized Bose-Hubbard model which covers the cases where spin-orbit coupling and synthetic flux are present. The resulting XYZ model contains Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and symmetric anisotropic couplings. Under certain conditions, this model reduces to various interesting magnetic Hamiltonians. Phase diagrams for two typical situations are obtained. We investigate magnetic phase transitions by focusing on order parameters and spin-spin correlations. Results are validated by numerical calculations using tensor network algorithms.

Quantum Phase Analysis of Extended Bose-Hubbard Model

Manoranjan Kumar, Sujit Sarkar, S. Ramasesha

We have obtained the quantum phase diagram of one dimensional extended Bose-Hubbard model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Abelian bosonization methods for different commensurabilities. We describe the nature of different quantum phases at the charge degeneracy point. We find a direct phase transition from Mott insulating phase to superconducting phase for integer band fillings of bosons. We predict explicitly the presence of two kinds of repulsive Luttinger liquid phases, apart from the charge density wave and superconducting phases for half-integer band fillings. Our study reveals that extended range interactions are necessary to get the correct phase boundary of an one-dimensional interacting bosons system.

Magnetic phase transition in coherently coupled Bose gases in optical lattices

Luca Barbiero, Marta Abad, Alessio Recati

We describe the ground state of a gas of bosonic atoms with two coherently coupled internal levels in a deep optical lattice in a one-dimensional geometry. In the single-band approximation this system is described by a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. The system has a superfluid and a Mott insulating phase that can be either paramagnetic or ferromagnetic. We characterize the quantum phase transitions at unit filling by means of a density-matrix renormalization-group technique and compare the results with a mean-field approach and an effective spin Hamiltonian. The presence of the ferromagnetic Ising-like transition modifies the Mott lobes. In the Mott insulating region the system maps to the ferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model in a transverse field and the numerical results compare very well with the analytical results obtained from the spin model. In the superfluid regime quantum fluctuations strongly modify the phase transition with respect to the well-established mean-field three-dimensional classical bifurcation.

Phase Diagram of Spin-1 Bosons on One-Dimensional Lattices

Matteo Rizzi, Davide Rossini, Gabriele De Chiara +2 more

Spinor Bose condensates loaded in optical lattices have a rich phase diagram characterized by different magnetic order. Here we apply the density matrix renormalization group to accurately determine the phase diagram for spin-1 bosons loaded on a one-dimensional lattice. The Mott lobes present an even or odd asymmetry associated to the boson filling. We show that for odd fillings the insulating phase is always in a dimerized state. The results obtained in this work are also relevant for the determination of the ground state phase diagram of the S = 1 Heisenberg model with biquadratic interaction.

Dynamic properties of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model

Satoshi Ejima, Holger Fehske, Florian Gebhard

We use the density-matrix renormalization group method to investigate ground-state and dynamic properties of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model, the effective model of ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice. For fixed maximum site occupancy n b = 5, we calculate the phase boundaries between the Mott insulator and the "superfluid" phase for the lowest two Mott lobes. We extract the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter from the density-density correlation function and determine accurately the critical interaction strength for the Mott transition. For both phases, we study the momentum distribution function in the homogeneous system, and the particle distribution and quasi-momentum distribution functions in a parabolic trap. With our zero-temperature method we determine the photoemission spectra in the Mott insulator and in the "superfluid" phase of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. In the insulator, the Mott gap separates the quasi-particle and quasi-hole dispersions. In the "superfluid" phase the spectral weight is concentrated around zero momentum.

Bose-Hubbard model in a strong effective magnetic field: Emergence of a chiral Mott insulator ground state

Arya Dhar, Maheswar Maji, Tapan Mishra +3 more

Motivated by experiments on Josephson junction arrays, and cold atoms in an optical lattice in a synthetic magnetic field, we study the ``fully frustrated'' Bose-Hubbard model with half a magnetic flux quantum per plaquette. We obtain the phase diagram of this model on a two-leg ladder at integer filling via the density matrix renormalization group approach, complemented by Monte Carlo simulations on an effective classical $XY$ model. The ground state at intermediate correlations is consistently shown to be a chiral Mott insulator (CMI) with a gap to all excitations and staggered loop currents which spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry. We characterize the CMI state as a vortex supersolid or an indirect exciton condensate, and discuss various experimental implications.
