Correlated spontaneous emission on the Danube

We consider collective spontaneous emission from an ensemble of N identical two-level atoms prepared by absorption of a single photon–a.k.a. single photon Dicke superradiance. We discuss dynamical properties of superradiance for small (R ≪ λ) and large (R ≫ λ) atomic cloud. Moreover, we address the effects of virtual processes on collective decay rate and Lamb shift. It turns out that virtual processes lead to relatively small yet interesting effects on the time evolution of a rapidly decaying state. However, such processes substantially modify the dynamics of trapped states by bringing in new channels of decay.

Laser-induced transparency and dark-line effects caused by three-wave mixing in atomic systems

Seyed M. Sadeghi, Jochen Meyer, H. Rastegar

We study laser-induced transparency and dark-line effects in a two-level atomic system where the upper transition level is coupled by a laser field to a dressed system consisting of two lower-energy metastable states mixed by a second laser field (\ensuremath{\Pi} configuration). We show that the emission (absorption) spectrum of the two-level system develops two dynamic dark lines (transparency holes) with tunable central frequencies equal to the Rabi frequency of the second field with positive and negative signs, and widths proportional to that of the first field. The detailed evolution of these effects at low- and high-field intensities and the role of quantum interferences are discussed by presenting a model based on laser-induced continuum structure and adopting a dressed-state picture. We discuss various nonlinear processes in this system and show how the dynamics of emission and absorption spectra are determined by one- and two-photon coupling processes.

Quantum statistics of light after two-photon absorption and emission processest

Salvatore Carusotto

Two-photon absorption and emission for a collection of two level atoms from a single mode beam of light are considered and the statistical proper- ties of the field after the interaction are investigated without placing any restriction of the population of the atomic levels . The dynamical behaviour of the field is described by assuming the atomic levels maintained with a nearly fixed popula- tion distribution . By applying iteration methods the time development for the density operator of the field is written and an expression for the coherent component is obtained . This component appears to be present only when there is a coherent component in the field before the interaction . The statistical properties of the field after the interaction, when the mean photon number is large initially, are then discussed and explicit calculations are carried out for some special cases of initial fields . Finally, it is shown that two-photon spontaneous emission field can be expressed as a superposition of chaotic fields .
