Lattice Defects in the Kitaev Honeycomb Model

John Brennan, Jiří Vala

The Kitaev honeycomb lattice system is an important model of topological materials whose phase diagram exhibits both abelian and non-abelian topological phases. The latter, a so-called Ising phase, is related to topological superconductors. Its quasiparticle excitations, which are formed by Majorana fermions attached to vortices, show non-abelian fractional statistics and are known as Ising anyons. We investigate dislocation defects in the Ising phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model. After introducing them to the system, we accordingly generalize our solution of this model to the situation with the defects. The important part of this effort is developing an appropriate Jordan-Wigner fermionization procedure. It is expected that the presence of defects manifests itself by the formation of fermionic zero-energy modes around the defect end points. We numerically confirm this expectation and further investigate properties of these modes. The computational potential of our technique is demonstrated for both diagonalization and dynamical simulations. The latter focuses on the process of fusion of the vortex zero-energy modes with the Majorana fermions attached to the defect. This process simulates fusion of non-abelian Ising anyons.

Implementing Majorana fermions in a cold-atom honeycomb lattice with textured pairings

Ruizhi Pan, Charles W. Clark

Recent studies in the realization of Majorana fermion (MF) quasiparticles have focused on engineering topological superconductivity that derives from proximity effects of conventional superconductors and spin textures. We propose an effective model to create unpaired MFs at a honeycomb lattice edge by generalizing a two-dimensional topologically nontrivial Haldane model and introducing textured pairings. The core idea is to add both the spin-singlet and textured spin-triplet pairings to a pseudospin-state-dependent, time-reversal-symmetry (TRS) noninvariant honeycomb lattice, and to satisfy generalized ``sweet spot'' conditions as in the Kitaev chain model. Our model has a gapped superconducting phase and a gapless phase; either phase may have zero or nonzero topological winding numbers. The discriminant that distinguishes those two phases gives a measure of TRS breaking and may have more general implications. Effective Majorana zero modes arise at edges in distinct phases with different degrees of degeneracy. Our theoretical model motivates concepts, such as ``textured pairings'' and the ``strength'' of TRS breaking, that may play important roles in future implementation of MFs with cold atoms in optical lattices.

Topological Transitions of Gapless Paired States in Mixed-Geometry Lattices

DH Kim, Joel S. J. Lehikoinen, Päivi Törmä

We propose a mixed-geometry system of fermionic species selectively confined in lattices of different geometry. We investigate how such asymmetry can lead to exotic multiband fermion pairing in an example system of honeycomb and triangular lattices. A rich phase diagram of interband pairing with gapped and gapless excitations is found at zero temperature. We find that the two-band contribution of the honeycomb lattices to the paired state helps to stabilize the gapless phase with one or two Fermi surfaces. We also show that the Fermi surface topology further divides the gapless phase into subclasses between which the system undergoes density-driven Lifshitz transitions.
