Implementing Majorana fermions in a cold-atom honeycomb lattice with textured pairings

Abstract

Recent studies in the realization of Majorana fermion (MF) quasiparticles have focused on engineering topological superconductivity that derives from proximity effects of conventional superconductors and spin textures. We propose an effective model to create unpaired MFs at a honeycomb lattice edge by generalizing a two-dimensional topologically nontrivial Haldane model and introducing textured pairings. The core idea is to add both the spin-singlet and textured spin-triplet pairings to a pseudospin-state-dependent, time-reversal-symmetry (TRS) noninvariant honeycomb lattice, and to satisfy generalized ``sweet spot'' conditions as in the Kitaev chain model. Our model has a gapped superconducting phase and a gapless phase; either phase may have zero or nonzero topological winding numbers. The discriminant that distinguishes those two phases gives a measure of TRS breaking and may have more general implications. Effective Majorana zero modes arise at edges in distinct phases with different degrees of degeneracy. Our theoretical model motivates concepts, such as ``textured pairings'' and the ``strength'' of TRS breaking, that may play important roles in future implementation of MFs with cold atoms in optical lattices.

Floquet-Engineered Hybrid Topological Orders with Majorana Edge Modes in Number-Conserving Fermionic Quantum Simulators

Zhi Lin, Song, Qi, Yue, Sheng +3 more

We develop an experimental protocol based on Floquet-engineered ultracold fermions in optical lattices, enabling the emulation of pair-hopping and competing singlet/triplet pairing interactions. Through large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations, we uncover three emergent topological phases: (i) A Majorana-enabled spin-density-wave (MS) phase featuring exponentially localized edge charges, non-local fermionic edge correlations, and doubly degenerate entanglement spectra; (ii) A z-axis polarized triplet superconducting (TS) phase exhibiting fractionalized edge spins (S=1/4 per edge), two-fold ground state degeneracy and a bulk single-particle gap; (iii) A hybrid x-directional triplet superconducting (XTS) phase that uniquely combines fractional spin textures and Majorana-type edge correlations, defining a new universality class of hybrid orders in number-conserving systems. These findings establish a universal framework for engineering non-Abelian topological matter, crucially bypassing the need for external pairing fields while maintaining experimental feasibility with current cold-atom techniques.

Majorana spin liquids, topology, and superconductivity in ladders

Karyn Le Hur, Ariane Soret, Fan Yang

We theoretically address spin chain analogs of the Kitaev quantum spin model on the honeycomb lattice. The emergent quantum spin-liquid phases or Anderson resonating valence-bond (RVB) states can be understood, as an effective model, in terms of $p$-wave superconductivity and Majorana fermions. We derive a generalized phase diagram for the two-leg ladder system with tunable interaction strengths between chains allowing us to vary the shape of the lattice (from square to honeycomb ribbon or brickwall ladder). We evaluate the winding number associated with possible emergent (topological) gapless modes at the edges. In the ${A}_{z}$ phase, as a result of the emergent ${\mathbf{Z}}_{2}$ gauge fields and $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux ground state, one may build spin-1/2 (loop) qubit operators by analogy to the toric code. In addition, we show how the intermediate gapless $B$ phase evolves in the generalized ladder model. For the brick-wall ladder, the $B$ phase is reduced to one line, which is analyzed through perturbation theory in a rung tensor product states representation and bosonization. Finally, we show that doping with a few holes can result in the formation of hole pairs and leads to a mapping with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in polyacetylene; a superconducting-insulating quantum phase transition for these hole pairs is accessible, as well as related topological properties.

Time-reversal symmetric Kitaev model and topological superconductor in two dimensions

Ryota Nakai, Shinsei Ryu, Akira Furusaki

A time-reversal invariant Kitaev-type model is introduced in which spins (Dirac matrices) on the square lattice interact via anisotropic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. The model is exactly solved by mapping it onto a tight-binding model of free Majorana fermions coupled with static ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge fields. The Majorana fermion model can be viewed as a model of time-reversal-invariant superconductor and is classified as a member of symmetry class DIII in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification. The ground-state phase diagram has two topologically distinct gapped phases which are distinguished by a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological invariant. The topologically nontrivial phase supports both a Kramers' pair of gapless Majorana edge modes at the boundary and a Kramers' pair of zero-energy Majorana states bound to a 0-flux vortex in the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux background. Power-law decaying correlation functions of spins along the edge are obtained by taking the gapless Majorana edge modes into account. The model is also defined on the one-dimension ladder, in which case again the ground-state phase diagram has ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ trivial and nontrivial phases.

Topological transitions in the Yao-Lee spin-orbital model and effects of site disorder

Vladislav Poliakov, Wen-Han Kao, Natalia Borisovna Perkins

The Yao-Lee model is an example of exactly solvable spin-orbital models that are generalizations of the original Kitaev honeycomb model with extra local orbital degrees of freedom. Similarly to the Kitaev model, both spin and orbital degrees of freedom are effectively represented using sets of three-flavored Majorana fermions. The Yao-Lee model exhibits a quantum spin liquid ground state with gapped and immobile ${Z}_{2}$ fluxes and threefold degenerate itinerant Majorana fermions. Our work demonstrated that by introducing different time-reversal-symmetry- (TRS) breaking fields one can split the degeneracy of Majorana fermions and close the gap for some of the bands, thus changing its topology. We calculated a comprehensive topological phase diagram for the Yao-Lee model by considering various combinations of TRS-breaking fields. This investigation revealed the emergence of distinct topological regions, each separated by nodal lines, signifying an evolution in the model's topological properties. We also investigated the impact of vacancies in the system. Our findings revealed that while vacancies modify the low-energy spectrum of the model, their presence has a limited impact on the topological properties of the model, at least for small-enough concentrations.

Majorana-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

Chengshu Li, Marcel Franz

Phase diagram of a Hubbard model for Majorana fermions on the honeycomb lattice is explored using a combination of field theory, renormalization group, and mean-field arguments, as well as exact numerical diagonalization. Unlike the previously studied versions of the model we find that even weak interactions break symmetries and lead to interesting topological phases. We establish two topologically nontrivial phases at weak coupling, one gapped with chiral edge modes and the other gapless with antichiral edge modes. At strong coupling a mapping onto a novel frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ model suggests a highly entangled spin liquid ground state.
