Abstract

A time-reversal invariant Kitaev-type model is introduced in which spins (Dirac matrices) on the square lattice interact via anisotropic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. The model is exactly solved by mapping it onto a tight-binding model of free Majorana fermions coupled with static ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge fields. The Majorana fermion model can be viewed as a model of time-reversal-invariant superconductor and is classified as a member of symmetry class DIII in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification. The ground-state phase diagram has two topologically distinct gapped phases which are distinguished by a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological invariant. The topologically nontrivial phase supports both a Kramers' pair of gapless Majorana edge modes at the boundary and a Kramers' pair of zero-energy Majorana states bound to a 0-flux vortex in the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux background. Power-law decaying correlation functions of spins along the edge are obtained by taking the gapless Majorana edge modes into account. The model is also defined on the one-dimension ladder, in which case again the ground-state phase diagram has ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ trivial and nontrivial phases.

Exactly solvable model for two-dimensional topological superconductors

Zitao Wang, Shang-Qiang Ning, Xie Chen

In this paper, we present an exactly solvable model for two-dimensional topological superconductors with helical Majorana edge modes protected by time-reversal symmetry. Our construction is based on the idea of decorated domain walls and makes use of the Kasteleyn orientation on a two-dimensional lattice, which was used for the construction of the symmetry protected fermion phase with ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry by Tarantino et al. and Ware et al. By decorating the time-reversal domain walls with spinful Majorana chains, we are able to construct a commuting projector Hamiltonian with zero correlation length ground state wave function that realizes a strongly interacting version of the two-dimensional topological superconductor. From our construction, it can be seen that the ${T}^{2}=\ensuremath{-}1$ transformation rule for the fermions is crucial for the existence of such a nontrivial phase; with ${T}^{2}=1$, our construction does not work.

Evolution of Majorona zero-energy edge states in a $T^2 = -1$ symmetry protected 1D topological superconductor with dominant spin-orbit coupling

Alestin Mawrie

We consider a 1D topological superconductor (TSC) constructed by coupling a pair of Kitaev's Majorana chains with opposite spin configurations. Such a 1D lattice model is known to be protected by a $T^2 = -1$ time-reversal symmetry. Furthermore, we consider a modeled Rashba spin-orbit coupling on such a system of $T^2=-1$ time-reversal symmetric TSC. The Rashba spin-orbit coupling together with the chemical potential engineered the phase transitions of the edge states in the system and consequently the number of Majorona's zero-energy edge modes (MZM's) emerging at the edge of the coupled chains. Correspondingly, the topological nature of the system is described by a phase diagram consisting of three different phases. The three phases are characterized by a topological winding number, $\mathcal{W}=1$, $2$ (with one and two MZM's: topological phases) and $\mathcal{W}=0$ (devoid of any MZM: trivial insulating phase).

Majorana zero modes, spontaneous $Z_2^{f}$ symmetry breaking, and long range edge correlation in Kitaev chains: analytic solutions and density-matrix-renormalization-group study

Jian-Jian Miao, Hui-Ke Jin, Fu‐Chun Zhang +1 more

We study Kitaev model in one-dimension with open boundary condition by using exact analytic methods for non-interacting system in the half filled limit as well as in the symmetric case of $\Delta=t$, and by using density-matrix-renormalization-group method for interacting system with nearest neighbor repulsion. We show explicitly that the emergence of Majorana zero mode is associated with the spontaneous symmetry broken of fermion number parity operator $Z_2^f$, which is $+1$ for even number of fermions and $-1$ for odd number of fermions. Our results are in support of recent proposal by Klassen and Wen\cite{Klassen}, who proposed such spontaneous symmetry broken in systems with Majorana zero modes. We suggest and examine an edge correlation function of Majorana fermions to characterize the long range order in the topological superconducting states and study the phase diagram of the interating Kitaev chain.

Γ -matrix generalization of the Kitaev model

Congjun Wu, Daniel P. Arovas, Hsiang-Hsuan Hung

We extend the Kitaev model defined for the Pauli matrices to the Clifford algebra of $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ matrices, taking the $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4$ representation as an example. On a decorated square lattice, the ground state spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry and exhibits a topological phase transition. The topologically nontrivial phase carries gapless chiral edge modes along the sample boundary. On the three-dimensional (3D) diamond lattice, the ground states can exhibit gapless 3D Dirac-cone-like excitations and gapped topological insulating states. Generalizations to even higher rank $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ matrices are also discussed.

Topological Quantum Spin Liquids in a Ladder with Majorana fermions and p-wave Superconductivity

Magali Korolev, Fan Yang, Erik Schwartz Sørensen +1 more

In this article, we address the possibility of topological quantum spin liquids with only short-range (spin) correlations in the whole phase diagram in a ladder system, through an exactly solvable model which represents a generalization of the two-dimensional Kitaev honeycomb spin model to a ribbon geometry. This system gives rise to $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields emerging in a static way in the ground state through Majorana fermions which then produce either $0$ or $π$ flux. Through a quantum field theory perspective, mathematical and Density Matrix Renormalization Group results, we present our progress on the geometrical, topological and physical classification of this model through observables navigating on the whole phase diagram presenting three spin-liquid phases with a spin gap and a metallic phase in the sense of Majorana fermions. We propose a bulk-edge correspondence revealing the presence of protected zero-energy Majorana fermions at the edge in the phases with a gap and revealing also the presence of itinerant Majorana fermions in the bulk in the topological liquid phase. The proposed approach allows us to distinguish between properties of the brickwall ladder giving rise to a special line and those of the square ladder allowing for the gapless Majorana liquid phase. This model gives some hope on finding solutions for topological quantum spin models, e.g. with $π$ flux, on a square lattice geometry. This approach also allows for a correspondence onto models of topological superconductivity.

Intrinsic Second-Order Topological Superconductors with Tunable Majorana Zero Modes

Xiao-Jiao Wang, Yijie Mo, Zhi Wang +2 more

Dirac semimetals, with their protected Dirac points, present an ideal platform for realizing intrinsic topological superconductivity. In this work, we investigate superconductivity in a two-dimensional, square-lattice nonsymmorphic Dirac semimetal. In the normal state near half-filling, the Fermi surface consists of two distinct pockets, each enclosing a Dirac point at a time-reversal invariant momentum ($\textbf{X}=(π,0)$ and $\textbf{Y}=(0,π)$). Considering an on-site repulsive and nearest-neighbor attractive interaction, we use self-consistent mean-field theory to determine the ground-state pairing symmetry. We find that an even-parity, spin-singlet $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave pairing is favored as it gives rise to a fully gapped superconducting state. Since the pairing amplitude has opposite signs on the two Dirac Fermi pockets, the superconducting state is identified as a second-order topological superconductor. The hallmark of this topological phase is the emergence of Majorana zero modes at the system's boundaries. Notably, the positions of these Majorana modes are highly controllable and can be manipulated simply by tailoring the boundary sublattice terminations. Our results highlight the promise of nonsymmorphic Dirac semimetals for realizing and manipulating Majorana modes.
