Abstract

Abstract Spatial photon correlations and mode content of the squeezed vacuum light generated in a system of two separated nonlinear crystals is investigated. The contribution of both the polar and azimuthal modes with non-zero orbital angular momentum is analyzed. The control and engineering of the spatial properties and degree of entanglement of the non-classical squeezed light by changing the distance between crystals and pump parameters is demonstrated. Methods for amplification of certain spatial modes and managing the output mode content and intensity profile of quantum twisted light are suggested.

Twisted photons: new classical and quantum applications

Juan P. Torres, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Lluís Torner

Twisted light, or light with orbital angular momentum (OAM), plays an emerging role in both classical and quantum science, with important applications in areas as diverse as biophotonics, micromachines, spintronics, or quantum information. It offers fascinating opportunities for exploring new fundamental ideas in physics, as well as for being used as a tool for practical applications. One important point is to determine how to generate single photons, and two-photon states, with an appropriate OAM content. Here we describe the paraxial orbital angular momentum of entangled photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in different non-collinear geometries. These geometries introduce a variety of new features. In particular, we find the OAM of entangled pairs generated in purely transverse-emitting configurations, where the entangled photons counter-propagate perpendicularly to the direction of propagation of the pump beam. The spatial walk-off of all interacting waves in the parametric process also determines the OAM content of the down-converted photons, and here its influence is also revealed.

Entangling Different Degrees of Freedom by Quadrature Squeezing Cylindrically Polarized Modes

C. Gabriel, Andrea Aiello, W. Zhong +9 more

Quantum systems such as, for example, photons, atoms, or Bose-Einstein condensates, prepared in complex states where entanglement between distinct degrees of freedom is present, may display several intriguing features. In this Letter we introduce the concept of such complex quantum states for intense beams of light by exploiting the properties of cylindrically polarized modes. We show that already in a classical picture the spatial and polarization field variables of these modes cannot be factorized. Theoretically it is proven that by quadrature squeezing cylindrically polarized modes one generates entanglement between these two different degrees of freedom. Experimentally we demonstrate amplitude squeezing of an azimuthally polarized mode by exploiting the nonlinear Kerr effect in a specially tailored photonic crystal fiber. These results display that such novel continuous-variable entangled systems can, in principle, be realized.

Photon Spatial Properties and Correlations in Nonclassical Squeezed States of Light Carrying the Orbital Moment

Roman V. Zakharov, Olga V. Tikhonova

Abstract The possibility is demonstrated of controlling photon spatial properties and correlations in the near field region for nonclassical squeezed light generated during parametric scattering in a nonlinear interferometer consisting of two spaced crystals. The possibilities are considered of reconstructing modes from experimentally measured covariances.

Twisted photons for quantum applications

Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Clara I. Osorio, Noelia Gonzalez +2 more

In this talk we will give an overview of the latest advances in the control of the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of photons for applications in quantum information and quantum optics [1]. The OAM of light is related with the intensity and phase spatial profiles of the beam, and it can be controlled by different means. Moreover, photons can be entangled in this degree of freedom, which is a particular case of spatial entanglement of photons [2,3].

Manipulation of continuous variable orbital angular momentum squeezing and entanglement by pump shaping

Zhi Li, Xulian Guo, Hengxin Sun +2 more

Spatially structured quantum states, such as orbital angular momentum (OAM) squeezing and entanglement, is currently a popular topic in quantum optics. The method of generating and manipulating spatial quantum states on demand needs to be explored. In this paper, we generated OAM mode squeezed states of −5.4 dB for the L G 0 + 1 mode and −5.3 dB for the L G 0 − 1 mode directly by an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the first time. Additionally, we demonstrated that the OAM mode squeezed and entangled states were respectively generated by manipulating the nonlinear process of the OPO by controlling the relative phase of two beams of different modes, thus making two different spatial multimode pump beams. We characterized the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) entangled states by indirectly measuring the squeezing for the H G 10 ( 45 ∘ ) mode and H G 10 ( 135 ∘ ) mode, and directly measuring the entanglement between the L G 0 + 1 and L G 0 − 1 modes. The effective manipulation of the OAM quantum state provides a novel insight into the continuous variable quantum state generation and construction on demand for high-dimensional quantum information and quantum metrology.
