Kerr-effect analysis in a three-level negative index material under magneto cross-coupling

Abstract

Abstract We discuss the feasibility of the Kerr effect in negative refractive index materials under magneto cross-coupling and reservoir interaction. The considered medium is a typical three-level atomic system where we derive both the refractive and the gain spectrum. The profiles are analyzed for a weak probe field, and for varying strengths of the strong control field. The considered scheme shows an enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity which we attribute to the contribution of the electromagnetic components of the fields. For more realistic experimental conditions, we discuss the dependence of the Kerr effect on different thermal bath coupling constants.

Negative index of refraction in a four-level system with magnetoelectric cross coupling and local field corrections

Frank Bello

This research focuses on a coherently driven four-level atomic medium with the aim of inducing a negative index of refraction while taking into consideration local field corrections as well as magnetoelectric cross coupling (i.e.,chirality) within the material's response functions. Two control fields are used to render the medium transparent for a probe field which simultaneously couples to an electric and a magnetic dipole transition, thus allowing one to test the permittivity and permeability of the material at the same time. Numerical simulations show that a negative index of refraction with low absorption can be obtained for a range of probe detunings while depending on number density and the ratio between the intensities of the control fields.

Enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in a negative refractive atomic medium

张红军 张红军, Hongjun Zhang Hongjun Zhang, 钮月萍 +5 more

The Kerr nonlinearity of a left-handed material is analyzed in a four-level atomic system. It is shown that, due to the effect of quantum interference, a large enhanced Kerr nonlinearity accompanied by vanishing absorption can be realized via choosing appropriate parameters in this negative refraction atomic medium. It not only shows the large nonlinearity but also acts as the phase and amplitude compensating effects.

Cross-Kerr interaction in a four-level atomic system

Gary F. Sinclair, Natalia Korolkova

We derive the form of the cross-Kerr interaction in a four-level atomic system in an N configuration. We use time-independent perturbation theory to calculate the eigenenergies and eigenstates of the Schr\"odinger equation for the system. The system is considered as a perturbation of a Raman-resonant three-level $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ scheme for which exact solutions are known. We show that within the strong control field limit the cross-Kerr interaction can arise between two weak probe fields. The strength of this nonlinear coupling is several orders of magnitude larger than that achievable using optical fibres.

Manipulating giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity at multiple frequencies in an atomic gaseous medium

Le Van Doai, Nguyen Le Thuy An, Dinh Xuan Khoa +2 more

We proposed a model for manipulating giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity in an atomic gaseous medium consisting of six-level inverted-Y systems. The absorption, dispersion, and cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficients of the medium are derived as analytical functions of the parameters of probe, coupling, and signal fields. It is shown that the cross-Kerr nonlinearity is enhanced significantly in three transparent windows under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Furthermore, the cross-Kerr nonlinearity can be manipulated between positive and negative values by controlling intensity and/or frequency of the coupling laser. Such controllable giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity with the analytical interpretation is convenient to find experimental parameters and is useful for studying applications of controllable multi-channel quantum phase gates.

Giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity in a six-level inhomogeneously broadened atomic medium

Le Van Doai

Abstract We study the enhancement of cross-Kerr nonlinearity in a six-level inverted-Y-type inhomogeneously broadened atomic medium. The explicit analytical expressions for first- and third-order susceptibilities and cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficient are found in the presence of Doppler broadening. The analytical model is applied to 87 Rb atoms and it is shown that under the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) condition, the cross-Kerr nonlinearity is enhanced at multiple frequencies around three EIT windows. The amplitude and sign of the cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficient of the probe field are controlled by changing the parameters of the coupling field. The effect of Doppler broadening leads to a reduction in the transparent efficiency and thus reduces the amplitude of the cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficient. The analytical model can be used to easily fit the experimental observations at different temperatures and support future studies related to the cross-Kerr nonlinear effect.

All-optical switching via enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in three-level atoms

Hai Wang, David J. Goorskey, Min Xiao

Summary form only given. The reduced absorption and enhanced nonlinearity in a three-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system are very important in achieving an effective all-optical switching action. The Kerr-nonlinear index of refraction of a three-level EIT medium can be greatly enhanced near resonance due to atomic coherence induced in such a system in comparison with a two-level atomic system, as we have shown by using an optical ring cavity. Both the magnitude and sign of the Kerr-nonlinear index change dramatically for different frequency detunings of the controlling (or coupling) or cavity (or probe) field. Bistability and dynamic instability occur when such a three-level /spl Lambda/-type EIT system is placed inside an optical ring cavity and the controlling and cavity input intensities to exceed certain threshold values. In this paper, we present a recent experimental demonstration of controlling the cavity output intensity by modulating the frequency detuning of the controlling beam.
