QUANTUM STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF RADIATION

Abstract

We present a study on the quantum statistical properties of radiation in a one-photon micromaser. In particular, the possibility of generating steady-state squeezing is investigated. The spectral properties of the radiation field in a micromaser are also studied. \n \nWe show that the steady-state squeezing can be generated in a lossless micromaser by injecting the atoms in a coherent superposition of upper and lower states. It is shown by considering initial vacuum number and thermal state of the cavity field, that for a particular choice of the interaction time field evolves to a squeezed state. Steady- state squeezing is found to be independent of the initial state of the cavity field. However, the temporal evolution of the squeezing depends on the initial state of the field. Effects of cavity losses and pump fluctuations on steady-state squeezing are also investigated. \n \nFinally, an exact analytic expression for the linewidth of a micromaser in the absence of cavity losses is obtained by evaluating the two-time correlation function. A comparison with the natural linewidth of laser shows that under certain conditions gain contribution to the linewidth is same in both the cases. We also, derive an exact expression for the phoston distribution function and show that for a particular choice of the interaction time, the number state of the field can be generated.

The role of pump phase fluctuations in a micromaser

I Ashraf, Mansoora Majeed, B Akbar

We have studied the effect of pump phase fluctuations on steady-state squeezing in a one-photon micromaser for the case of both high- and low (finite)- Q cavities. Our system involves the preparation of a gain medium (atoms) in a partial coherent superposition of states, due to the finite linewidth of the pump field, before injecting them into the microwave cavity. We have found that even in the presence of a finite value of pump phase fluctuations we obtain 40% squeezing for high Q , which reduces to 25% for finite Q . In the absence of pump phase fluctuations we obtain 55% squeezing, in agreement with the previous work.

QUANTUM THEORY OF TWO-PHOTON MICROMASER AND LASER

IMRANA, ASHRAF

In this dissertation, we study the quantum theory of two-photon micromaser and laser. To begin with, we study the photon statistics of the two-photon micromaser by considering the interaction of a quantized single-mode field with an effective two-level atom through intermediate states. We present an exact solution for the photon distribution function and study the behaviour of mean photon number and photon number fluctuations. A periodic "collapse" and "revival" type behaviour is predicted. We find that the photon number fluctuations exhibits a periodic sub-Poissonian behaviour with respect to the interaction time. We then discuss the photon statistics of two-photon laser and derive an exact expression for photon distribution function. We find that photon distribution function for two-photon laser is wider than the Poisson distribution function. We also calculate the natural line-width of a two-level two-photon laser by using a Fokker-Planck approach. It is shown that, apart from a constant, the gain contribution to the laser linewidth is equal to the two-photon gain parameter and is independent of the mean number of photons in the field. Finally, we study the two-photon transitions in multi-level atomic system. In this case first we discuss the photon statistics of three-level two-photon micromaser and laser. Then we consider the two-photon transition in four-level atomic system by considering dye laser as an example.

INFLUENCE OF CAVITY LOSS ON GENERATION OF STEADY STATE FOURTH-ORDER AND SQUARED AMPLITUDE SQUEEZING IN MICROMASER

Li Fu-Li, 西安交通大学应用物理系,西安710049

The generation of the steady state fourth-order squeezing and squared amplitude squeezing in a micromaser by the coherent trapping approach is investigated. The results show that if two-level atoms injected into the cavity are initially in coherent state and the flight time of the atoms inside the cavity satisfies the trapping condition, the field can evolve into a coherent trapping state which exhibits steady state fourth-order squeezing and squared amplitude squeezing in the cavity as long as the flux of the atoms is moderately large.

Effect of finiteQon squeezed states in a micromaser

Shahid Qamar, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

The squeezing properties of the radiation field in a micromaser are analyzed. In particular, we consider the effect of finite Q on the steady-state squeezing inside the cavity. We also discuss the effect of pump fluctuations on squeezing and show that the regularization of pumping may lead to an increase in the steady-state squeezing.

Production of nonclassical states of a cavity field

Fam Le Kien

We derive the exact solution of the evolution equation for the density matrix of the field in a lossless micromaser cavity with the injected atoms prepared in their ground state. The time development of photon statistics and of the fluctuations in the field quadratures is analytically and numerically investigated. It is shown that a squeezed state with sub-Poissonian photon statistics can be created at the onset of evolution.

Generation of pure states in a two-photon micromaser: Effects of finite detuning and cavity losses

Miguel Orszag, Luis Roa, R. Ramírez

In this paper, we study the generation of pure states in a two-photon micromaser with finite detuning of the intermediate atomic level. This study was done via the temporal evolution of the discrete master equation. We show that it is possible to generate the ideal squeezed vacuum for a broad range of detunings in a lossless cavity and away from the trapping condition. We also consider the effect of cavity losses.
