Abstract

We use matrix product state representations and transfer matrix methods to calculate the reduced density matrix of a block of spins in the ground state of the Majumdar-Ghosh spin chain. The full entanglement spectrum is obtained and the von Neumann entanglement entropy is expressed as a function of block length. We found that the von Neumann entropy increases exponentially fast as the length of the block increases and has a saturation value of Smax = ln 3.

Entropy of XY Spin Chain and Block Toeplitz Determinants

Alexander Rudol'fovich Its, Bai-Qi Jin, V. E. Korepin

We consider entanglement in the ground state of the XY spin model on infinite chain. We use von Neumann entropy of a sub-system as a measure of entanglement. The entropy of a large block of neighboring spins approaches a constant as the size of the block increases. We prove rigorously expression for limiting entropy which was published before. We observe that the entropy reaches minimum at product states but increases boundlessly at phase transitions.

Entanglement and Density Matrix of a Block of Spins in AKLT Model

Ying Xu, Hosho Katsura, Takaaki Hirano +1 more

We study a 1-dimensional AKLT spin chain, consisting of spins S in the bulk and S/2 at both ends. The unique ground state of this AKLT model is described by the Valence-Bond-Solid (VBS) state. We investigate the density matrix of a contiguous block of bulk spins in this ground state. It is shown that the density matrix is a projector onto a subspace of dimension (S + 1) 2. This subspace is described by nonzero eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of the density matrix. We prove that for large block the von Neumann entropy coincides with Renyi entropy and is equal to ln (S + 1) 2.

Analysis of entropy of XY Spin Chain

Fabio Franchini, Alexander Rudol'fovich Its, Bai-Qi Jin +1 more

Entanglement in the ground state of the XY model on the infinite chain can be measured by the von Neumann entropy of a block of neighboring spins. We study a double scaling limit: the size of the block is much larger then 1 but much smaller then the length of the whole chain. In this limit, the entropy of the block approaches a constant. The limiting entropy is a function of the anisotropy and of the magnetic field. The entropy reaches minima at product states and increases boundlessly at phase transitions.

Entanglement signature of fully and partially dimerized phases in frustrated spin chains

Wuttichai Pankeaw, Teparksorn Pengpan, Pruet Kalasuwan

The von Neumann entanglement entropy of exact valence-bond ground states is studied in two frustrated one-dimensional spin chains: the spin-1/2 Majumdar-Ghosh (MG) model and the spin-3/2 J1-J2-J3 chain in its fully dimerized (FD) and partially dimerized (PD) phases. Using matrix-product-state representations, the entropy is computed as a function of system size for three complementary bipartitions - half-chain, single-site, and pairwise - under both open and periodic boundary conditions. In all cases, the entropy saturates to a finite constant in the thermodynamic limit, confirming area-law behavior. The saturation values, extracted via finite-size scaling, are directly related to the underlying virtual-spin bond structure. The MG model and FD phase exhibit similar entanglement behavior, differing primarily in saturation magnitude determined by spin value and bond multiplicity, and both display even-odd oscillations and exponential convergence with system size. In contrast, the PD phase shows qualitatively distinct signatures, including multiple half-chain saturation values depending on the bond type at the cut, asymmetric edge contributions in the single-site entropy, and a multi-band structure in the pairwise entropy reflecting the coexistence of single- and double-singlet bonds. These results establish entanglement entropy as a robust signature of frustrated bond architecture, enabling clear distinction among dimerized phases with different spin magnitude, bond multiplicity, and dimerization patterns.

Entanglement, combinatorics and finite-size effects in spin chains

Bernard Nienhuis, Massimo Campostrini B, Pasquale Calabrese

We carry out a systematic study of the exact block entanglement in the XXZ spin chain at Δ = −1/2. We present the first analytic expressions for reduced density matrices for n spins in a chain of length L (for n ≤6 and arbitrary but odd L ) for a truly interacting model. The entanglement entropy and the moments of the reduced density matrix and its spectrum are then easily derived. We explicitly construct the 'entanglement Hamiltonian' as the logarithm of this matrix. Exploiting the degeneracy of the ground state, we find the scaling behavior of the entanglement of the zero-temperature mixed state.

Block Entanglement in the Single-Hole Hubbard Model

K.L. Yao, Sun Xiao-Zhong, Zhen Li +3 more

We investigate the distribution of the entanglement of the one-dimensional single-hole Hubbard model (HM) and study the relationship between the entanglement and quantum phase transition in the model. The von Neumann entropy of a block with neighbouring spins L for a single-hole HM is calculated using the density-matrix renormalization group. The distributions of the entanglement entropy in the ground state, as a function of block length, show a dramatic effect, i.e. effectively decoupling with the centres, no matter how the Coulomb interaction u >0 or u <0. Contrarily, for the Coulomb interaction u = 0 or close to zero, the entanglement entropy in the single-hole model reaches a saturation value for a certain block size. For a fixed size L = 40, the ground state entanglement entropy measure, as a function of u , shows a peak corresponding to the critical quantum phase transition.
