Abstract

We investigate entanglement properties in the ground state of the open/periodic SU ( n ) generalized valence-bond-solid state consisting of representations of SU ( n ). We obtain exact expressions for the reduced density matrix of a block of contiguous spins and explicitly evaluate the von Neumann and the Rényi entropies. We discover that the Rényi entropy is independent of the parameter α in the limit of large block sizes and its value 2log n coincides with that of von Neumann entropy. We also find the direct relation between the reduced density matrix of the subsystem and edge states for the corresponding open boundary system.

Entanglement and Density Matrix of a Block of Spins in AKLT Model

Ying Xu, Hosho Katsura, Takaaki Hirano +1 more

We study a 1-dimensional AKLT spin chain, consisting of spins S in the bulk and S/2 at both ends. The unique ground state of this AKLT model is described by the Valence-Bond-Solid (VBS) state. We investigate the density matrix of a contiguous block of bulk spins in this ground state. It is shown that the density matrix is a projector onto a subspace of dimension (S + 1) 2. This subspace is described by nonzero eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of the density matrix. We prove that for large block the von Neumann entropy coincides with Renyi entropy and is equal to ln (S + 1) 2.

Entanglement and SU( n ) symmetry in one-dimensional valence-bond solid states

Román Orús, Hong-Hao Tu

Here we evaluate the many-body entanglement properties of a generalized SU($n$) valence-bond solid state on a chain. Our results follow from a derivation of the transfer matrix of the system which, in combination with symmetry properties, allows for an elegant and straightforward evaluation of different entanglement measures. In particular, the geometric entanglement per block, correlation length, von Neumann and R\'enyi entropies of a block, localizable entanglement, and entanglement length are obtained in a very simple way. All our results are in agreement with previous derivations for the SU($2$) case.

Entanglement in a Valence-Bond Solid State

Heng Fan, V. E. Korepin, Vwani Roychowdhury

We study entanglement in a valence-bond solid state, which describes the ground state of an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki quantum spin chain, consisting of bulk spin-1's and two spin-1/2's at the ends. We characterize entanglement between various subsystems of the ground state by mostly calculating the entropy of one of the subsystems; when appropriate, we evaluate concurrences as well. We show that the reduced density matrix of a continuous block of bulk spins is independent of the size of the chain and the location of the block relative to the ends. Moreover, we show that the entanglement of the block with the rest of the sites approaches a constant value exponentially fast, as the size of the block increases. We also calculate the entanglement of (i) any two bulk spins with the rest, and (ii) the end spin-1/2's (together and separately) with the rest of the ground state.

ENTANGLEMENT IN VALENCE-BOND-SOLID STATES

V. E. Korepin, YING XU

This article reviews the quantum entanglement in Valence-Bond-Solid (VBS) states defined on a lattice or a graph. The subject is presented in a self-contained and pedagogical way. The VBS state was first introduced in the celebrated paper by I. Affleck, T. Kennedy, E. H. Lieb and H. Tasaki (abbreviation AKLT is widely used). It became essential in condensed matter physics and quantum information (measurement-based quantum computation). Many publications have been devoted to the subject. Recently entanglement was studied in the VBS state. In this review, we start with the definition of a general AKLT spin chain and the construction of VBS ground state. In order to study entanglement, a block subsystem is introduced and described by the density matrix. Density matrices of 1-dimensional models are diagonalized and the entanglement entropies (the von Neumann entropy and Rényi entropy) are calculated. In the large block limit, the entropies also approach finite limits. Study of the spectrum of the density matrix led to the discovery that the density matrix is proportional to a projector.

Exact analysis of entanglement in gapped quantum spin chains

Hosho Katsura, Takaaki Hirano, Yasuhiro Hatsugai

We investigate the entanglement properties of the valence-bond-solid states with generic integer spin $S$. Using the Schwinger boson representation of the valence-bond-solid states, the entanglement entropy, the von Neumann entropy of a subsystem, is obtained exactly and its relationship with the usual correlation function is clarified. The saturation value of the entanglement entropy, $2\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{log}}_{2}(S+1)$, is derived explicitly and is interpreted in terms of the edge-state picture. The validity of our analytical results and the edge-state picture is numerically confirmed. We also propose an application of the edge state as a qubit for quantum computation.

Entanglement of an alternating bipartition in spin chains: relation with classical integrable models

Raul A Santos

We study the entanglement properties of a class of ground states defined by matrix product states, which are generalizations of the valence bond solid (VBS) state in one dimension. It is shown that the transfer matrix of these states can be related to representations of the Temperley–Lieb algebra, allowing an exact computation of Renyi entropy. For an alternating bipartition, we find that the Renyi entropy can be mapped to an eight vertex model partition function on a rotated lattice. We also show that for the VBS state, the Renyi entropy of the alternating partition is described by a critical field theory with central charge c = 1. The generalization to SU ( n ) VBS and its connection with a dimerization transition in the entanglement Hamiltonian is discussed.
