Abstract

The possibility of using avalanche photodiodes that operate in the single-photon registration mode as a source of a random physical quantity in generators of random number sequences was evaluated. The operating modes of avalanche photodiodes were determined that allow generation of streams of random events, whose statistical characteristics are similar to those of a Poisson stream. Estimates of the similarity of the properties of generated random binary sequences to the properties of a uniformly distributed sequence are presented.

A Quantum Random Number Generator Based on the 100-Mbit/s Poisson Photocount Statistics

Kirill A. Balygin, Vladimir Y. Zaitsev, Andrey N. Klimov +2 more

A quantum random number generator is experimentally realized. The initial randomness source is a sequence of photocounts from quasi-single-photon radiation detected with a SiPM (Silicon Photo Multiplier) silicon avalanche detector array. The use of a SiPM provides a reliable control of the quantum nature of the Poisson photocount statistics. A special algorithm with nonexponential complexity allows one to extract from the Poisson process all the randomness contained in it, namely, a random uniform sequence of 0 and 1.

A Random Number Generator Based on Single-Photon Avalanche Photodiode Dark Counts

Shelan Khasro Tawfeeq

In this paper, a new physical random number generator is built. The generation concept is based on the dark pulses thermally generated in single photon avalanche photodiodes operating in the Geiger mode. Results show that the proposed random number generator produced nearly 50% zeros and 50% ones, which could be considered an acceptable suited for quantum cryptography systems.

Post-processing Free Quantum Random Number Generator Based on Avalanche Photodiode Array

Yang Li, Sheng‐Kai Liao, Futian Liang +3 more

Quantum random number generators adopting single photon detection have been restricted due to the non-negligible dead time of avalanche photodiodes (APDs). We propose a new approach based on an APD array to improve the generation rate of random numbers significantly. This method compares the detectors' responses to consecutive optical pulses and generates the random sequence. We implement a demonstration experiment to show its simplicity, compactness and scalability. The generated numbers are proved to be unbiased, post-processing free, ready to use, and their randomness is verified by using the national institute of standard technology statistical test suite. The random bit generation efficiency is as high as 32.8% and the potential generation rate adopting the 32 × 32 APD array is up to tens of Gbits/s.

Single photon detector on avalanche photodiode

Петро Шпатар, Oleksandr Hres, Heorhii Rozorinov +1 more

The technology of quantum cryptography, based on the quantum properties of light, allows a random sequence of bits to be transmitted over an unprotected communication channel in such a way that an intruder's interference in the transmission process generates additional noise in the channel and is detected by legitimate users. One of the important elements of the quantum key distribution system is a single photon detector. In this work proposed quantum cryptographic system that generates only an orthogonal basis (vertical and horizontal) has one semiconductor diode laser used to generate information and synchronization photons and functional diagram of the device for registration of single photons. The developed device allows increasing the quantum efficiency of registration up to 45%.

Quantum random number generator based on ‘Fermi–Dirac’ statistics of photocounts of faint laser pulses with a 75 Mbit s −1 rate

Abstract We implemented experimentally a quantum random number generator, based on the registration of quasi-single-photon light by a silicon photo-multiplier, which allows one to reliably achieve the Poisson statistics of photocounts. The use of the optimal grouping of photocounts and a polynomial-length sequence of the method for extracting the random sequence 0 and 1 made it possible to achieve the output rate of a provably random sequence up to 75 Mbit s − 1 .

Implementation of a quantum random number generator based on the optimal clustering of photocounts

Kirill A. Balygin, Vladimir Y. Zaitsev, Andrey N. Klimov +2 more

To implement quantum random number generators, it is fundamentally important to have a mathematically provable and experimentally testable process of measurements of a system from which an initial random sequence is generated. This makes sure that randomness indeed has a quantum nature. A quantum random number generator has been implemented with the use of the detection of quasi-single-photon radiation by a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) matrix, which makes it possible to reliably reach the Poisson statistics of photocounts. The choice and use of the optimal clustering of photocounts for the initial sequence of photodetection events and a method of extraction of a random sequence of 0’s and 1’s, which is polynomial in the length of the sequence, have made it possible to reach a yield rate of 64 Mbit/s of the output certainly random sequence.
