A Wave Interpretation of the Compton Effect

Abstract

Abstract – The Compton effect is commonly cited as a demonstration of the particle feature of light. In this investigation, we present an alternative interpretation of the Compton effect based on the postulates of de Broglie and on the wave scattering from a space- and timevarying medium, without explicit resort to the conservation of energy and momentum. A Wave Interpretation of the Compton Effect As a Further Demonstration of the Postulates of de Broglie

Ching-Chuan Su

The Compton effect is commonly cited as a demonstration of the particle feature of light, while the wave nature of matter has been proposed by de Broglie and demonstrated by Davisson and Germer with the Bragg diffraction of electron beams. In this investigation, we present an entirely different interpretation of the Compton effect based on the postulates of de Broglie and on an interaction between electromagnetic and matter waves. The speeds of interacting electrons in the Compton scattering are quite fast and its mechanism relies heavily on the mass variation. Thus, based on this wave interpretation, the Compton effect can be viewed as a further demonstration of the postulates of de Broglie for high-speed particles. In addition to the scattered wave, a direct radiation depending on the mass variation is predicted, which provides a means to test the wave interpretation.

Further Development on Collision Space-Time: Unified Quantum Gravity

Espen Gaarder Haug

We will here show that there is one more relativistic wave equation rooted in the relativistic energy Compton moment relation, which should not be confused with the standard relativistic energy momentum relation. The standard momentum is, from a quantum perspective, rooted in the de Broglie wave. The de Broglie wave is not mathematically defined for rest-mass particles and has strange properties such as converging to infinity when the particle is almost at rest. As mentioned in the previous paper, the de Broglie wave is likely just a mathematical derivative of the true matter wave, which we have good reasons to think is the Compton wave. A wave equation that satisfies the relativistic energy Compton momentum relation will, in addition automatically satisfy the standard relativistic energy momentum relation, so there is no conflict between these two relations. The new one related to Compton is just the deeper reality and help explain why it gives simpler and more elegant relativistic wave equations, which are likely easier to interpret in terms of the physical reality.

Matter Waves Proposed by de Broglie (1923)

S. Brandt

Abstract We have seen that it took about two decades to fully realize that light or, generally, electromagnetic radiation has both wave and particle properties. The final proof came with the discovery of the Compton effect (Episode 31). Even Compton himself needed years before he saw that the particle picture of radiation was unavoidable in view of the experimental evidence. Still in the year of Compton’s publications, Louis de Broglie [1] on purely theoretical grounds proposed that the particle–wave duality not only holds for radiation but also for material particles, i.e., for particles with a rest mass such as the electron.

Compton shift and de Broglie frequency

Raji Heyrovská

Compton scattering is usually explained in terms of the relativistic mass and momentum. Here, a mathematically equivalent and simple non-relativistic interpretation shows that the Compton frequency shift is equal to the de Broglie frequency associated with the moving charged particle (e.g., an electron). In this work, the moving electron is considered as a particle and the electromagnetic energy associated with it is shown to be proportional to the de Broglie frequency. This energy is released when its motion is arrested, as for example on a diffraction screen, where it causes the observed interfernce patterns. Thus, electrons transport electromagnetic energy from a source to a sink.

Reinterpreting the Compton Effect: A Geometric Explanation Without Particles

Daniel Avilés Hurtado

The Compton effect is conventionally represented as a collision between a photon and an electron, with the observed wavelength shift determined by energy--momentum conservation and scattering geometry. This article revisits the event from a complementary perspective. Beginning from the experimental relation itself and from the wave side of wave--particle duality, we explore the Compton encounter as a finite dynamical process involving geometry, response, coupling, reorganization, and characteristic times. Two heuristic encounters guide the analysis. A stone striking a responsive surface foregrounds deformation, resistance, and relaxation, while a gravitational assist foregrounds trajectory and path-dependent exchange. These perspectives are then returned to a vortical reading of the electron and electromagnetic radiation. We distinguish an interaction time \(\tau_{\rm int}\) from a relaxation time \(\tau_{\rm relax}\), introduce the provisional ratio \(\mathcal R_{\tau}=\tau_{\rm int}/\tau_{\rm relax}\), and organize geometry, energetic cost, and coupling into a dynamical grammar of the encounter. The comparison is then extended to the photoelectric effect. Placing the naked experimental features of both phenomena side by side reveals a common radiation--matter interaction structure together with different accessible outcomes. This motivates the speculative possibility that Compton scattering and photoelectric emission occupy neighbouring regimes within a broader landscape of radiation--matter encounters. A provisional quantity, \(R_{\rm avail}\), is introduced as a possible measure of the capacity of an electronic structure and its local environment to accommodate and redistribute an incoming perturbation within a given regime. The article therefore proposes an enlargement of the Compton problem: from reproducing the observed scattering relation to investigating the physical dynamics that may connect distinct radiation--matter outcomes.
