Abstract

Based on the theory of physical layer security (PLS), this paper demonstrates that analog network coding (ANC) has ability to improve the PLS performance of the two-way relay channel against different kinds of eavesdroppers. In this paper, we define the security and unsecurity region and derive the system security capacity with ANC and traditional transmission schemes. In particular, we consider external and internal eavesdroppers respectively. Besides, we investigate the factors influencing the ANC system PLS performance. The simulation results show that ANC can greatly improve the system PLS performance against an external eavesdropper, and ensure that an internal eavesdropper cannot decode any confidential information. Furthermore, the ANC system PLS performance can be slightly improved by increasing signal source's transmission power level and eavesdropping channel's noise level.

Improving the Physical-Layer Security of Wireless Two-Way Relaying via Analog Network Coding

Hui‐Ming Wang, Qinye Yin, Xiang‐Gen Xia

In this paper, we address the physical-layer security of two-way (bi-directional) transmissions of two terminals with the help of multiple relay nodes in the presence of an eavesdropper, where each node in the network is only equipped with single antenna. The secrecy sum rate is used as the metric of security, which is the rate difference between the legitimate information exchange between the terminals and the information leakage to the eavesdropper. We propose two-phase analog network coding (ANC) and power allocation scheme for the relay nodes and terminals to enhance the security of the data exchange. Three different schemes are proposed. The first scheme is the optimal ANC to achieve the maximum secrecy sum rate, i.e. secrecy capacity, which is found to be mathematically difficult to solve. Two suboptimal schemes are proposed with and without the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) of the eavesdropper, respectively. The solutions of both schemes are shown to be unique and globally optimum, which are solved by convex optimization techniques. Numerical evaluation results of the obtained secrecy sum rate and transmit power are provided and analyzed to show the properties and efficiency of the proposed ANCs.

Securing multi-antenna two-way relay channels with analog network coding against eavesdroppers

Amitav Mukherjee, Arnold Lee Swindlehurst

This work investigates the vulnerability of analog network coding (ANC) to physical layer attacks from adversarial users, when all nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. Specifically, we examine the MIMO two way relay channel (TWRC) with two users trying to communicate with each other via a relay node in the presence of a passive eavesdropper. We propose a new performance metric, namely the secrecy sum rate of the MIMO TWRC, to quantify performance. We then consider secure transmission strategies for the scenarios of no eavesdropper channel state information at the transmitters (ECSIT) and complete ECSIT, respectively. Finally, numerical results are presented to illustrate the improvement in secrecy obtained with the proposed transmission schemes.

Analysis of the optimal cooperative jamming strategy in ANC systems

Yuyang Zhang, Yuanyuan Gao, Baofeng Yang +4 more

This paper proposes a new optimal cooperative jamming (CJ) strategy in the analog network coding (ANC) system against both external and internal eavesdroppers. Firstly, we derive the ANC system security capacity with CJ against eavesdroppers. On this basis, we analyze the jamming power allocation between two time slots subject to a total jamming power constraint. The simulation results show that using CJ in the ANC system can make eavesdroppers decode no confidential information, and the optimal jamming power allocation factor is one, which means that the optimal CJ strategy in the ANC system is to use all constrained jamming power on sending jamming signals only in the first time slot.

Relay and Jammer Selection Scheme in Wireless Networks with the Statistical Information of Multiple Eavesdropping Channels

Mengling Liu, Kan Yu, Yajing Li +2 more

Physical layer security (PLS) based on cooperative communication has been regarded as a promising technique to enhance the system security. In this paper, considering the statistical information of multiple eavesdropping channels, we investigate the security performance of cooperative relay and jammer selection scheme based on maximizing secrecy capacity (SC), where an optimal relay is selected to assist the source transmission, and the selected jammer is used to transmit the interference signal to suppress the eavesdroppers. Furthermore, the asymptotic expression of secrecy outage probability (SOP), a fundamental metric in the research of physical layer security, is derived. Finally, simulation results validate the security performance of the proposed scheme, and give some significant insights into the network security.

Security-concern relaying scheme for amplify-and-forward network with untrusted relay nodes

Huiying Song, Yuanyuan Gao, Guozhen Zang +2 more

The Physical Layer Security (PLS) technology has been proved to be an effective way to reduce information leakage in wireless communication networks. This paper discusses the problem of secure transmission for Amplify-and-Forward (AF) cooperative network which contains both an external eavesdropper and some untrusted relays at the same time, where each relay acts as a helper of transmitting information and a potential eavesdropper. We adopt the technology of Cooperative Jamming (CJ), which yields a significant performance in terms of providing a better level of security against eavesdropping and improving the secure transmission performance of the system. First we discuss the security performance of this new system model, give the secrecy rate in theory and derive a tight lower bound of this secrecy rate. Then we propose a relay selection scheme, which avoids using the channel state information (CSI) of external eavesdropper, to transmit information. Afterward, we also discuss the problem of power allocation in order to maximize the secrecy rate.

Secrecy Performance on Half-Duplex Two-Way Multi-Relay Transmission Technique Under Wireless Physical Layer Security

Mohammed Ahmed Salem, Azlan Abd Aziz, Mohamad Yusoff Alias +1 more

The open broadcast nature of the wireless networks makes it vulnerable to the eavesdropper attacks. The physical layer security (PLS) is a grown research field that exploits the characteristics of the physical wireless channel to prevent the eavesdropper interruptions and attacks. The use of the cooperative relay transmission is a method to approach the physical layer security. This paper studies the secrecy performance metrics of the half-duplex two-way multi-relaying technique. A cooperative jamming protocol is proposed to enhance the physical layer security, where the destination sends jamming signals to the eavesdropper node to degrade its channel capacity. However, the relays can act as a jammer and send jamming signals to the eavesdropper node. Moreover, Simulations of the performance metrics namely the secrecy capacity (Cs) and the secrecy outage probability (SOP) applied on the technique are presented and discussed to measure the secrecy level of the proposed technique compared with an existing technique namely half-duplex one-way multi-relaying technique. Based on simulations and discussions the proposed technique outperforms the existing technique in term of secrecy performance.
