Abstract

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) with a real local oscillator (LO) has been extensively studied recently due to its security and simplicity. In this paper, we propose a novel implementation of a high-key-rate CVQKD with a real LO. Particularly, with the help of the simultaneously generated reference pulse, the phase drift of the signal is tracked in real time and then compensated. By utilizing the time and polarization multiplexing techniques to isolate the reference pulse and controlling the intensity of it, not only the contamination from it is suppressed, but also a high accuracy of the phase compensation can be guaranteed. Besides, we employ homodyne detection on the signal to ensure the high quantum efficiency and heterodyne detection on the reference pulse to acquire the complete phase information of it. In order to suppress the excess noise, a theoretical noise model for our scheme is established. According to this model, the impact of the modulation variance and the intensity of the reference pulse are both analysed theoretically and then optimized according to the experimental data. By measuring the excess noise in the 25km optical fiber transmission system, a 3.14Mbps key rate in the asymptotic regime proves to be achievable. This work verifies the feasibility of the high-key-rate CVQKD with a real LO within the metropolitan area.

High-speed Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a local local oscillator based on pilot-tone-assisted phase compensation

Heng Wang, Yaodi Pi, Wei Huang +7 more

A high-speed Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) with a local local oscillator (LLO) is experimentally demonstrated based on pilot-tone-assisted phase compensation. In the proposed scheme, the frequency-multiplexing and polarization-multiplexing techniques are used for the separate transmission and heterodyne detection between quantum signal and pilot tone, guaranteeing no crosstalk from strong pilot tone to weak quantum signal and different detection requirements of low-noise for quantum signal and high-saturation limitation for pilot tone. Moreover, compared with the conventional CVQKD based on homodyne detection, the proposed LLO-CVQKD scheme can measure X and P quadrature simultaneously using heterodyne detection without need of extra random basis selection. Besides, the phase noise, which contains the fast-drift phase noise due to the relative phase of two independent lasers and the slow-drift phase noise introduced by quantum channel disturbance, has been compensated experimentally in real time, so that a low level of excess noise with a 25 km optical fiber channel (with 5 dB loss) is obtained for the achievable secure key rate of 7.04 Mbps in the asymptotic regime and 1.85 Mbps under the finite-size block of 107.

Pilot-multiplexed continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a real local oscillator

Tao Wang, Peng Huang, Yingming Zhou +2 more

We propose a pilot-multiplexed continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) scheme based on a local local oscillator (LLO). Our scheme utilizes time-multiplexing and polarization-multiplexing techniques to dramatically isolate the quantum signal from the pilot, employs two heterodyne detectors to separately detect the signal and the pilot, and adopts a phase compensation method to almost eliminate the multifrequency phase jitter. In order to analyze the performance of our scheme, a general LLO noise model is constructed. Besides the phase noise and the modulation noise, the photon-leakage noise from the reference path and the quantization noise due to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are also considered, which are first analyzed in the LLO regime. Under such general noise model, our scheme has a higher key rate and longer secure distance compared with the preexisting LLO schemes. Moreover, we also conduct an experiment to verify our pilot-multiplexed scheme. Results show that it maintains a low level of the phase noise and is expected to obtain a 554-Kbps secure key rate within a 15-km distance under the finite-size effect.

Phase attack on reference pulses of continuous-variable quantum key distribution with real local oscillators

Biao Huang, Langhua Liu, Yu Wang +2 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) with a real local oscillator (LO) is confronted with new security issues attributed to the reference pulses transmitted together with quantum signals over the insecure quantum channel. This paper proposes a method of phase attack on reference pulses of the CVQKD with real LOs. Under the phase attack, the phase drifts of reference pulses are manipulated by eavesdroppers so that the phase compensation error is increased. Consequently, the secret key rate is reduced because of the imperfect phase compensation for quantum signals. Based on the noise model of imperfect phase compensation, both the parameters of actual transmittance and actual excess noise are deduced from the phase compensation accuracy, and then they are compared with those estimated by training signals. The simulation results show that the secret key rate calculated from the theoretical parameters is consistent with the one estimated by training signals.

Phase estimation using homodyne detection for continuous variable quantum key distribution

Mi Zou, Yingqiu Mao, Teng‐Yun Chen

In order to ensure the security of the local oscillator (LO) in continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), the LO in CV-QKD based on the local LO (LLO) scheme no longer passes through the quantum channel. For the LLO scheme using homodyne detection, two orthogonal quadratures of reference pulse can only be measured sequentially, which, as a result, each signal pulse should be accompanied by a pair of identical reference pulses. However, due to the phase shift between two adjacent pulses, it is difficult to prepare dual reference pulses with the same phase relative to the LO. In this paper, we propose an improved method to get around this difficulty, which is demonstrated experimentally for a transmitter and a receiver connected by a 50 km single mode fiber. The phase noise measured in the experiment is 2.0×10−3rad2, which is comparable to the recent experimental results using heterodyne detection. This method simplifies the preparation of phase reference pulses and removes the obstacles for the application of homodyne detection in the LLO scheme. In addition, this method can also be used for the compensation of quadrature imbalance in heterodyne detection, then the performance of heterodyne detection can be improved.

We experimentally demonstrate a 25 MHz repetition rate pilot-tone-assisted Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) with a local local oscillator (LLO) by employing the frequency-multiplexing and polarization-multiplexing techniques. In the proposed LLO-CVQKD system, the strong pilot tone and weak quantum signal can be separated in different frequency and polarization domain for avoiding the crosstalk between them and guaranteeing different detection requirements of low-noise for quantum signal and high-saturation limitation for pilot tone. Moreover, the dominant phase noise over 25 km optical fiber channel can be compensated in real time for supporting high secure key rate of 1.61 Mbps in the asymptotic regime.

Phase-reference polarization attack on continuous-variable quantum key distribution with a real local oscillator

Yun Feng Shao, Yan Pan, Heng Wang +5 more

The trusted phase noise model for continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol with a real local oscillator (LLO CVQKD) has been established recently, which can lead to a better quantum key distribution (QKD) performance by moving part of the phase noise from the untrusted channel-added noise to the trusted detector-added noise. However, the calibration of the trusted phase noise is related to the intensity of the phase-reference pulse, which can be used by the eavesdropper to hack the QKD system. Here, we present a polarization attack scheme against the phase-reference pulse. In practical LLO CVQKD systems, only a part of the phase-reference pulses are used to measure and compensate for the polarization drift of the signal pulses due to the limitation of polarization measurement. We show that Eve can manipulate the polarization of the unmeasured part of the phase-reference pulses to control the trusted phase noise. Simulations show that improving the polarization measurement ratio to 100% or monitoring the phase-reference pulse intensity in real time is necessary to guarantee the security of the practical LLO CVQKD system.
