Generalized Matrix Functions and Geometric Measure of Entanglement

Abstract

Given a complex n × n matrix A and an irreducible character χ of permutation group on n letters, generalized matrix function dχ(A) of A can be thought as combinatorial generalization of matrix permanent and determinant. Due to its combinatorial nature, it is usually a demanding task to assign the construction some geometrical meaning. In this presentation, we discuss how generalized matrix functions serve as essential tools in determining geometric measure of entanglement of certain quantum states. Along the way, we obtain some unexpected geometric interpretations and investigate some examples.

Interpretation of generalized matrix functions via geometric measure of quantum entanglement

Haixia Chang, Vehbi Emrah Paksoy, Fuzhen Zhang

By using representation theory and irreducible characters of the symmetric group, we introduce character dependent states and study their entanglement via geometric measure. We also present a geometric interpretation of generalized matrix functions via this entanglement analysis.

MATRIX PERMANENT AND QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT OF PERMUTATION INVARIANT STATES

Tzu-chieh Wei, Simone Severini B

We point out that a geometric measure of quantum entanglement is related to the matrix permanent when restricted to permutation invariant states. This connection allows us to interpret the permanent as an angle between vectors. By employing a recently introduced permanent inequality [Carlen, Loss and Lieb, Meth. and Appl. of Analysis, 13 (2006), no. 1, 1–17], we can write combinatorial formulas for quantifying the entanglement of permutation invariant basis states. When applying the geometric measure to permutation invariant states with nonnegative coefficients, we show that the overlap with a product state is maximized by a tensor product of the same single-party state. This extends some observations in [Hayashi et al., Phys. Rev. A 77, 012104 (2008)].

Generalized geometric measure of entanglement for multiparty mixed states

Tamoghna Das, Sudipto Singha Roy, Shrobona Bagchi +3 more

Computing entanglement of an arbitrary bipartite or multipartite mixed state is in general not an easy task as it usually involves complex optimization. Here we show that, exploiting symmetries of certain multiqudit mixed states, we can compute a genuine multiparty entanglement measure, the generalized geometric measure, for these classes of mixed states. The chosen states have different ranks and consist of an arbitrary number of parties.

Designing tight frames for quantum computing

Luis Quezada

The aim of this thesis is to explore the implementation of a special kind of quantum measurements, so called harmonic tight frames. To achieve this goal, representation theory is addressed, emphasizing its construction from irreducible representations and the relations they satisfy. These tools simplify the study due to the existence of symmetries, leading to the concept of group frames, defined as orbits under the unitary action of a group and characterized by their symmetry groups. Among the various groups, the simplest are the abelian ones, giving rise to harmonic frames, which are analyzed through the classification theorem of abelian groups and the characters of their irreducible representations. In the quantum mechanics context, the frame elements can be interpreted as pure states of a system. Therefore, the necessary and sufficient conditions for separability are explored, as separable states are easier to implement due to their local nature. Alternatively, when viewing frames as measurements, the concept of POVMs and Naimark's theorem are studied as key tools for designing measurements in quantum computers. Using this knowledge, a characterization of the harmonic frames is given from the abelian group structure theorem, which allows obtaining a necessary and sufficient condition for their separability. The conditions of maximum entanglement of these states for bipartite systems are also studied, obtaining a necessary condition on the dimensions of the subsystems. Finally, a quantum circuit is obtained that allows implementing the harmonic frames associated to cyclic groups as POVMs using a Fourier matrix and a permutation matrix. We conclude by giving simple examples where the results are applied to quantum computers and proposing future avenues of research that could serve to improve the circuit design and extend it to the case of all harmonic frames.

Quantum entanglement: geometric quantification and applications to multi-partite states and quantum phase transitions

Tzu-Chieh Wei

The degree to which a pure quantum state is entangled can be characterized by the distance or angle to the nearest unentangled state. This geometric measure of entanglement is explored for bi-partite and multi-partite pure and mixed states. It is determined analytically for arbitrary two-qubit mixed states, generalized Werner, and isotropic states, and is also applied to certain multi-partite mixed states, including two distinct multi-partite bound entangled states. Moreover, the ground-state entanglement of the XY model in a transverse field is calculated and shown to exhibit singular behavior near the quantum critical line. Along the way, connections are pointed out between the geometric measure of entanglement, the Hartree approximation, entanglement witnesses, correlation functions, and the relative entropy of entanglement.
