A theoretical study of line intensities in emission spectra of rare gas atoms in an alternating electric field

Abstract

In this work, a new theoretical approach is suggested for calculating the Stark component intensities of spectral lines in atomic emission spectra in an alternating circularly polarized electric field. In the framework of the proposed approach, regularities in the behaviour of the Stark component intensities in emission spectra of rare gas atoms in the electric field have been revealed. The found regularities have allowed us to clarify mechanisms of increasing intensity of spectral lines and their quenching in the electric field.

Simulation of the line profiles in the neon emission spectra in laser fields

Elena Vladimirovna Koryukina, V. I. Koryukin

A computer simulation of the spectral line profiles of the neon atom in an alternating circularly polarized electric field is carried out. The calculations are performed within the framework of a unified theoretical approach based on the numerical solution of the non-stationary Schrödinger equation. The simulation results make it possible to establish a number of regularities in the behavior of the neon spectral line profiles under changes in the electric field parameters. The resonance effects for the neon spectra in the electric field are investigated.

The influence of the resonance effects on the radiative characteristics of helium plasma

Elena Vladimirovna Koryukina, V. I. Koryukin

In the present work, the influence of an alternating circularly polarized electric field on the energy spectrum of the He atom is studied. The calculations are performed by the method of the energy matrix diagonalization of an atom in the electric field. This method has allowed us to study the behaviour of the helium energy spectrum from the same numerical procedure under resonant and non-resonant excitations by the electric field. Based on the calculation results, we have found that the resonance effects take place not only in the vicinity of resonance, but they influence the shift directions of the Stark states even under non-resonant excitation. Additionally, we have established that the helium energy spectrum behaves consistently in the electric field. The results obtained have allowed us to clarify mechanisms of the influence of the resonance effects on the radiative characteristics of helium plasma.

Stark broadening and satellite structure of hydrogen spectral lines in the presence of constant and microwave electric fields

G. L. Klimchitskaya, Yu. V. Pavlov

A theoretical investigation is made of spectral lines of the hydrogen atom which interact with constant and microwave electric fields of different intensities and frequencies. It is shown that to obtain an adequate form of the spectral lines one must from the very beginning take into account the fine structure of the hydrogen levels.

Nonlinear effects in the emission and absorption spectra of gases in resonant optical fields

Igor M. Beterov, R. I. Sokolovskiǐ

The review systematizes the experimental material and reports the fundamental theoretical results on the study of nonlinear resonance effects in spectra of atomic systems situated in the radiation field of lasers. The theoretical part explains the topics of greatest importance and significance for understanding of the experimental studies: the Stark effect in an optical field; the nonequilibrium velocity distribution of the atoms; the shape of the spectral line for a transition adjacent to a transition combining with a strong field; the simultaneous manifestation of the Stark effect and of Doppler broadening in the form of a very sharp structure on the line contour; a brief mention of the influence of collisions, recoil, and other factors on the sharp structure in spectra. The experimental part reports the results of experiments on the observation of the Stark effect in the optical region of the spectrum, the fine structure of the profile of a Doppler-broadened line and its properties, namely the dependence on the observation direction, the anisotropy in the field of a standing wave, the polarization properties, etc. in spectra of spontaneous or stimulated emission, absorption, and generation.

Stark spectroscopy of forbidden two-photon transitions: a sensitive probe for the quantitative measurement of small electric fields

P P Herrmann, John A. Hoffnagle, Nick Schlumpf +2 more

The authors have investigated both theoretically and experimentally the intensities of the forbidden two-photon lines 6S 1/2 to 41P 3/2 ,61P 3/2 in an atomic beam of caesium exposed to an electric field. At low field strengths the line intensities depend quadratically on the electric field and are quantitatively well described by Stark mixing parameters obtained from perturbation theory. At higher field strengths the line intensities exhibit an unexpected linear field dependence which is in good agreement with the results from a more general calculation. The authors applied the results obtained to measure the components of a small spurious electric field in a thermionic ionisation detector.

The shape of spectral lines of two-electron Rydberg atoms/ions: analytical solution

Eugene Oks

Abstract We consider an isolated two-electron Rydberg atom/ion, where the average distance of the inner electron from the nucleus is much smaller than the average distance of the outer Rydberg electron from the nucleus. We calculate analytically the shape of any spectral line emitted by the inner electron under the rotating electric field of the outer electron—by using the O 4 symmetry of hydrogenic atoms/ions. By applying the obtained analytical expressions to the example of the Ly-alpha line, we arrive, in particular, to a peculiar result . Namely, as the spectral line splits into several components, the most intense components exhibit a quadratic Stark effect with respect to the electric field of the outer electron (though it is linear with respect to the dipole moment of the inner electron), while one would intuitively expect a linear dependence on the electric field of the outer electron since the subsystem Z + e is hydrogenic. We provide a physical explanation of this peculiar result.
