Abstract

Within the energy approach (S-matrix formalism) it is presented a new approach to collisional ionization of the Rydberg atoms in the quantum defect approximation. The Rydberg systems theory is a basis for creation of new class of the atomic sensors.

THERMAL PHOTOIONIZATION OF THE RYDBERG ATOMS BY THE BLACKBODY RADIATION: NEW RELATIVISTIC APPROACH

T. N. Zelentsova, T. B. Perelygina

Within the gauge-invariant quantum electrodynamics perturbation theory it is presented a new relativistic approach to definition of the thermal photoionization characteristics for the Rydberg atoms, in particular, the Rydberg atoms, ionized by the Blackbody radiation. Theory of corresponding phenomena in the Rydberg systems is a basis for creation of new class of the atomic sensors.

COLLISIONS OF RYDBERG ATOMS : RECENT ADVANCES

F. Gounand

Some features of the collisional properties of Rydberg atoms are demonstrated by some recent examples. The collisional cross-sections mainly depend on two parameters : the energy defect between the considered level and the closest hydrogenic states, and the interaction between the quasi-free Rydberg electron and the perturber. Moreover it is shown that the inelastic processes can contribute to the broadening of the optical Rydberg lines. In the presence of a DC electric field new effects can arise, as demonstrated by some recent experiments.

SENSING RYDBERG AUTOIONIZATION RESONANCES IN SPECTRUM OF YTTERBIUM: NEW SPECTRAL DATA AND EFFECTS

А. А. Свинаренко

We applied a generalized energy approach (Gell-Mann and Low S-matrix formalism) combined with the relativistic multi-quasiparticle (QP) perturbation theory (PT) with the DiracKohn-Sham zeroth approximation to studying autoionization resonances (AR) in complex atoms, in particular, energies and widths for the ytterbium in Rydberg states. The unusual features of the Rydberg autoionization resonances in ytterbium can be effectively used in new types of the quantum sensors.

The study of collisional ionization properties of Rydberg Cs atoms with CCl 4 molecules

Chun Li

In order to explain some characteristics discovered in the experimental study of the collisional ionization of Rydberg Cs atoms with CCl 4 molecules, two corrections were made to the quasi free electron mode, commonly used to describe the collsional ionization of Rydberg atoms with molecules:(1)the influence of the core and the quantum defect of Rydberg atom were taken into account;(2)the separation probability of the product ion pair was calculated. With this corrected model, a theoretical result in good agreement with our experiment measurements was obtained. A comparison with another reported experimental result was also made.

The combined relativistic energy approach and many-body perturbation theory with zeroth model potential approximation are used for computing Blackbody radiation ionization characteristics of the Rydberg atoms, in particular, the sodium in states with n=17,18,40-70. The calculated ionization rate values are compared with available theoretical and experimental data.

The combined relativistic energy approach and relativistic many-body perturbation theory with the zeroth model density functional approximation are used for computing the thermal Blackbody radiation ionization characteristics of the Rydberg atoms, in particular, the sodium and caesium in Rydberg states with n=40-100. The comparison of the calculated ionization rate values with available theoretical and experimental data is carried out.
