Abstract

We propose a scheme for generating an electromagnetically induced grating in a three-level Λ-type atomic system via multicolor coherence. Using the multicolour coupling field, the diffraction intensity of grating, especially the first-order diffraction can be significantly enhanced. The diffraction efficiency of grating can be controlled by changing the sum of the phases and the intensity of sidebands in the trichromatic driving field, and detuning the probe field frequency. This work may be useful for designing novel photonic devices for quantum information processing, quantum networking and optical imaging.

Multicolor manipulation of negative refraction in a three-level Λ atomic system is theoretically investigated.Based on multicolor coherence, the negative refractive index can be obtained with reduced absorption. The refractive index can also be controlled by changing the sum of the phases of the sidebands in the trichromatic driving fields.By adjusting the sum phase, the refractive index can be varied between negative and positive in two different frequency bands.Furthermore, the frequency band corresponding to the negative refractive index is widened by increasing the intensity and the frequency difference of the trichromatic field.

Two-dimensional electromagnetically induced grating via gain and phase modulation in a two-level system

Guangling Cheng, Cong Lu, Ai-Xi Chen

Abstract A scheme for two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetically induced grating via spatial gain and phase modulation is presented in a two-level atomic system. Based on the interactions of two orthogonal standing-wave fields, the atom could diffract the weak probe beam into high-order directions and a 2D diffraction grating is generated. It is shown that the diffraction efficiency of the grating can be efficiently manipulated by controlling the Rabi frequencies of control fields, the detunings of the control and probe fields, and interaction length. Different from 2D cross-grating via electromagnetically induced transparency in a four-level atomic system, the present scheme results from the spatial modulation of gain and phase in a simple two-level system, which could lead to 2D gain-phase grating with larger diffraction intensities in the diffraction directions. The studies we present may have potential applications in developing photon devices for optical-switching, optical imaging and quantum information processing.

Efficient electromagnetically induced phase grating via quantum interference in a four-level N-type atomic system

Tayebeh Naseri, Rasoul Sadighi‐Bonabi

An electromagnetically induced phase grating controlled by spontaneous generated coherence (SGC) in a four-level N-type atomic system is studied. The results indicate that the diffraction efficiency of the phase grating is dramatically enhanced due to the existence of SGC, and an efficient electromagnetically induced phase grating can be obtained. A novel result is considerable improvement of the intensity of higher-order diffractions via relative phase between applied laser fields. Furthermore, it is found that the frequency detuning of the switching and coupling fields with the corresponding atomic transition, incoherent pumping, and the interaction length can improve the efficiency of the phase grating in the present atomic model.

Phase and amplitude control of atomic grating in a three level closed lambda System

Abstract We have theoretically studied the electromagnetically induced grating (EIG) in a three-level closed Λ-type atomic system. The upper level is coupled to the two lower levels via a strong control and a weak probe field. In addition to these two optical fields a weak microwave field is also applied to couple the lower two levels. Our results show that the relative phase of the three fields in the presence of microwave field enhances the dispersion in the medium and consequently provides control over magnitude of the diffraction intensities. We have optimized the system parameters such as strength of the fields and interaction length to attain increased first order diffraction. Furthermore, we have also studied the effects of probe detuning on diffraction intensities. Interestingly, the probe detuning results in suppression of the zeroth order intensity while increasing the higher order intensities.

Electromagnetically induced phase grating via population trapping condition in a microwave-driven four-level atomic system

Tayebeh Naseri, Rasoul Sadighi‐Bonabi

An electromagnetically induced phase grating (EIG) controlled by coherent population trapping (CPT) in a four-level Y-type atomic system is studied. The CPT condition promotes significantly the dispersion of light into the first-order diffraction in constructing a phase modulation grating by transferring energy from zero-order to first-order diffraction. The diffraction efficiency of the phase grating is enhanced by up to 30% of the total probe intensity at the first-order diffraction. The present atomic scheme takes full advantage of the microwave-driven field for generating the EIG, which induces the quantum coherence and controls linear and nonlinear behaviors of the present system. Furthermore, it is noticed that the higher-order diffraction intensities are improved via a microwave-driven field and the phase and amplitude of the microwave field can improve the efficiency of the phase grating. These novel results could find potential applications in developing new photonic devices, such as all-optical switching at low light levels.

Two-dimensional electromagnetically induced cross-grating in a four-level tripod-type atomic system

Li Wang, Fengxue Zhou, Pidong Hu +2 more

By using two orthogonal coupling standing-wave fields, we propose a scheme for a two-dimensional electromagnetically induced cross-grating (EICG) in a four-level tripod-type atomic system. Based on the electromagnetically induced transparency, the probe field will be diffracted and form the two-dimensional EICG through the interaction of the two coupling standing-wave fields. It is shown that the first-order diffraction intensity of the two-dimensional EICG depends observably on the detuning of the probe field and the Rabi frequencies of the two coupling standing-wave fields. The results may be used to develop novel photonic devices for use in quantum information processing, quantum networking and optical imaging.
