Abstract

A new method for sensing a structure of the stochastic, multi-mode laser pulse field and photon-correlation, chaotic features of atomic and nano-optical systems in this field is developed and a dynamics of multi-photon ionization in intense field is studied. As a basis for developing a new method for sensing stochasticity and chaotic features we use new quantum approach to calculation of the multi-photon resonances spectra characteristics for atomic systems in a stochastic laser field and the same field plus DC electric field. Some numerical illustrations regarding the multi-photon resonance spectra and stochasticity sensing for a number of atomic systems are presented.

STUDY OF ATOMIC SYSTEMS IN STRONG LASER FIELDS: SPECTRAL HIERARCHY, DYNAMICAL STABILISATION AND GENERATION OF ULTRA-SHORT VUV AND X-RAY PULSES

Alexander V. Glushkov, I. M. Shpinareva, V. M. Ignatenko +1 more

A new method for sensing a spectral hierarchy and dynamical stabilization in atomic systems in the intense laser field is presented. It is carried out modeling generation of the atto-second VUV and X-ray pulses under ionization of atomic systems by femto-second optical pulse. The theory of studied phenomena is the physical basis for construction of the new nano-atomic elements and devices, including sensors, sources of VUV and X-ray radiation, quantum Carnot engine, single-atomic lasers, quantum computers elements etc.

The resonant multiphoton resonances shifts and widths and ionization cross-sections for multielectron atoms in a intense laser radiation field are studied. It is carried out a new consistent approach to atom in a strong realistic laser field, based on the relativistic energy formalism (S-matrix adiabatic formalism), relativistic Dirac equation Green function method and relativistic many-body perturbation theory with the Dirac-Kohn-Sham zeroth approximation. In relativistic theory, the Gell-Mann and Low adiabatic formula for energy shift is connected with electrodynamical scattering matrice, which includes interaction with as a laser field as a photon vacuum field (radiative decay). The optimized basis of the relativistic orbitals is generated with using a minimization procedure for the gauge-non-invariant contribution (the fourth-order of the QED perturbation theory) to the radiation width of atomic state. An approach to treating the multiphoton atomic processes is outlined on example of H, Cs, Kr,Mg etc. Analysis shows that the shift and width of the multi-photon resonance line for the interaction “atom- multimode laser pulse” is greater than the corresponding shift and width for a case of the “atom- single-mode pulse” (the Lorenz pulse model) interaction. From the physical point of view it is naturally provided by action of the photon-correlation effects and influence of the laser pulse multi-modity.

Resonant multiphoton ionization by finite-bandwidth chaotic fields

P. Zoller

Resonant multiphoton ionization by finite bandwidth multimode radiation is investigated without the restriction of either a "long" or a "short" correlation time of the field. By approximating the multimode radiation by a stochastic model of a chaotic field, the stochastic atomic-density-matrix equation is reduced to a tractable infinite set of differential equations. For a given bandwidth this set can be suitably truncated and numerically integrated. For large-bandwidth fields it turns out that these truncated equations constitute a systematic improvement of the method usually employed of decorrelating the atom-field variables. For zero-bandwidth fields the well-known result is recovered in that the statistical averaging of the ionization probability reduces to an average with respect to the Glauber $P$-distribution function of the chaotic field. Detailed results of numerical calculations for two-photon ionization are presented which reveal a number of new interesting features.

3 + 2 photoionization of Xe in a pulsed, stochastic field

James C. Camparo, P. Lambropoulos

We have developed a computational framework for the study of the effects of field fluctuations on strongly driven nonlinear transitions. Nonlinearity may stem from cither the strong coupling (saturation) of a resonant transition or its multiphoton character, or it may stem from both in the most general case. Our approach is based on a Monte Carlo simulation of stochastic field fluctuations, which allows maximum flexibility in the stochastic nature of the field and in the type of process that is studied. Here, we report on a more general problem than has previously been considered in the interaction of atoms with stochastic fields, namely, the three-photon resonant five- photon ionization of xenon, 3 + 2 photoionization of xenon has been the subject of a fair number of experimental investigations. It involves nonlinearity in with a bound-bound and a bound-free transition as well as an ac-Stark shift. Consequently, there are correlations among three fluctuating parameters: the three-photon Rabi frequency, the two-photon ionization rate, and the intensity-dependent ac-Stark shift, and it is these correlations that make the stochastic-field problem almost intractable to traditional methods of analysis.

Characteristics of ionization probability with adiabatic inversion by stochastic fields

Shuichi Hasegawa, Hitoshi Maeda, Takafumi Kakudoh +1 more

Adiabatic inversion in two- and three-level systems excited by stochastic fields is investigated. The stochastic electric fields, which are called the chaotic field and the phase-diffusion field, can invert the population of a two-level atom. In a three-level system, we compare the method of sweeping the laser frequency with that of the resonance excitation by lasers that have bandwidths appropriate to the width of Doppler broadening. When the Doppler shift is taken into account, bandwidths of the electric fields are effective to ionize atoms efficiently. When sweeping the first exciting laser frequency, the delay of the second laser pulse increases the ionization probability. If the half width at half maximum of Doppler broadening is narrow and two lasers irradiate atoms simultaneously, the finite bandwidths of the lasers ionize more atoms than sweeping the laser frequency. On the other hand, if the Doppler broadening is large or the second laser irradiates the atoms properly after the first laser, sweeping the first laser frequency is efficient for ionization. Sweeping the laser frequency is not suitable for the system where the intermediate state's spontaneous-decay constant is short. For that system it is efficient to ionize the atoms by lasers that have the finite bandwidth appropriate for the Doppler broadening.
