Abstract

Abstract We investigate the formation and propagation of the Thirring spatial optical solitons in asymmetric quantum wells (QWs). By virtue of the quantum interference effect, the cross-phase modulation (XPM) can be enhanced greatly while the self-phase modulation and linear absorption are well suppressed with proper system parameters. Diffraction of the probe fields can be well balanced by the enhanced XPM alone, which results in their stationary propagation and the formation of Thirring vector optical solitons. In comparison with traditional vector optical solitons, such Thirring spatial optical solitons generated in the QWs can be of various widths and peak powers, implying their more prospective applications in optical communications and optical information processing.

Spatial vector solitons in a four-level tripod-type atomic system

We study the generation of weak-light spatial vector solitons in a cold tripod-type atomic system. The condition of generating spatial vector solitons is discussed by analyzing the linear and nonlinear properties of the system. Due to the balance between the enhanced self-phase and cross-phase modulation of the Kerr nonlinearity and the diffraction effect, two orthogonal polarization components of the weak-light probe field can form various spatial vector solitons in the atomic system, such as bright-bright vector solitons and dark-dark vector solitons. We also demonstrate the possibility of generating Manakov spatial vector solitons in this atomic system.

Slow-light solitons in coupled asymmetric quantum wells via interband transitions

Chengjie Zhu, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the formation and propagation of optical solitons in an asymmetric double quantum-well structure. Using a standard method of multiple scales we derive a nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation with some high-order correction terms that describe effects of linear and differential absorption, nonlinear dispersion, delay response of nonlinear refractive index, and third-order dispersion of a probe field. We show that in order to make slowly varying envelope approximation be valid an excitation scheme of interband transition should be adopted. We also show that for realistic quantum-well parameters the probe field with time length of picosecond or shorter must be used to make dispersion and nonlinear lengths of the system be smaller than absorption length, only by which a shape-preserving propagation of optical solitons is available. In addition, we clarify validity domains for the perturbed NLS equation as well as the high-order NLS equation and provide various optical soliton solutions in different regimes both analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that the solitons obtained have ultraslow propagating velocity and can be generated under very low input light intensity.

Slow optical solitons via intersubband transitions in a semiconductor quantum well

Wen-Xing Yang, Ray-Kuang Lee

We show the formation of bright and dark slow optical solitons based on intersubband transitions in a semiconductor quantum well (SQW). Using the coupled Schrödinger-Maxwell approach, we provide both analytical and numerical results. Such a nonlinear optical process may be used for the control technology of optical delay lines and optical buffers in the SQW solid-state system. With appropriate parameters, we also show the generation of a large cross-phase modulation (XPM). Since the intersubband energy level can be easily tuned by an external bias voltage, the present investigation may open possibilities for electrically controlled phase modulators in solid systems.
