Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate a source of nearly pure single photons in arbitrary temporal shapes heralded from a parametric down-conversion (PDC) source at telecom wavelengths. The technology is enabled by the tailored dispersion of in-house fabricated waveguides with shaped pump pulses to directly generate the PDC photons in on-demand temporal shapes. We generate PDC photons in Hermite-Gauss and frequency-binned modes and confirm a minimum purity of 0.81, even for complex temporal shapes.

Scalable, tailored purity heralded single-photon source enabled by second harmonic generation of GHz-rate ultrashort pulsed laser

Sangeeta, Bhaskar Kanseri

We demonstrate a miniaturized, scalable high rate, pulsed single-photon source in the telecom band obtained by heralding a spontaneous parametric downconversion source pumped with a highly tunable GHz repetition rate pulsed laser in an all-guided wave scheme. For developing this source, we first perform second harmonic generation of ultrashort pump pulses varying with GHz rate at the telecom wavelength. Our investigation demonstrates a trade-off between the spectral brightness and the single-photon purity of the heralded single-photon source by controlling the repetition rate of pump pulses. For a 5 GHz repetition rate, a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide in type-0 configuration produces the highest spectral brightness ∼8.5×106pairs/s/mW/GHz. We quantify the single-photon purity using the second-order autocorrelation function g(2), which reaches the lowest value of ∼(3.4 ± 0.038) × 10−4 for 20 GHz repetition rate pulses, generating heralded single photons at 45 kHz rate. Our all-guided wave configuration offers easy integration and alignment, paving the way for developing scalable, integrable, tunable purity single-photon sources for quantum technology applications, such as quantum communication and quantum networks.

Direct generation of genuine single-longitudinal-mode narrowband photon pairs

Kai-Hong Luo, Harald Herrmann, Stephan Krapick +6 more

The practical prospect of quantum communication and information processing relies on sophisticated single-photon pairs, which feature a controllable waveform, narrow spectrum, excellent purity, fiber compatibility, and miniaturized design. For practical realizations, stable, miniaturized, low-cost devices are required. Sources with one or some of the above characteristics have already been demonstrated, but it is quite challenging to obtain a source with all of the described characteristics simultaneously. Here we report on an integrated single-longitudinal-mode, non-degenerate, narrowband photon pair source that exhibits all the requirements needed for quantum applications. The device is composed of a periodically poled, Ti-indiffused, lithium niobate waveguide with high reflective dielectric mirror coatings deposited on the waveguide end-faces. Photon pairs with wavelengths around 890 and 1320 nm are generated via type II phase-matched parametric down-conversion (PDC). Clustering in this dispersive cavity restricts the whole conversion spectrum to one single-longitudinal mode in a single cluster, yielding a narrow bandwidth of only 60 MHz. The high conversion efficiency in the waveguide, together with the spectral clustering in the doubly resonant waveguide, leads to a high brightness of pairs/(s mW MHz). This source exhibits prominent single-longitudinal-mode purity and remarkable temporal shaping capability. In particular, due to temporal broadening, we can observe that the coherence time of the two-photon component of the PDC state is actually longer than that of the single-photon states. The miniaturized monolithic design enables this source to have various fiber communication applications.

An efficient integrated two-color source for heralded single photons

S Krapick, H Herrmann, V Quiring +3 more

We present a pulsed and integrated, highly non-degenerate parametric down-conversion (PDC) source of heralded single photons at telecom wavelengths, paired with heralding photons around 800 nm. The active PDC section is combined with a passive, integrated wavelength division demultiplexer on-chip, which allows for the spatial separation of signal and idler photons with efficiencies of more than 96.5%, as well as with multi-band reflection and anti-reflection coatings which facilitate low incoupling losses and a pump suppression at the output of the device of more than 99%. Our device is capable of preparing single photons with efficiencies of 60% with a coincidences-to-accidentals ratio exceeding 7400. Likewise, it shows practically no significant background noise compared to continuous wave realizations. For low pump powers, we measure a conditioned second-order correlation function of g (2) = 3.8 × 10 −3 , which proves almost pure single-photon generation. In addition, our source can feature a high brightness of 〈 n pulse 〉 = 0.24 generated photon pairs per pump pulse at pump power levels below 100 μ W. The high quality of the pulsed PDC process in conjunction with the integration of highly efficient passive elements makes our device a promising candidate for future quantum networking applications, where an efficient miniaturization plays a crucial role.

Coherent temporal filtering of multimode parametric down-conversion using a quantum pulse gate

Abhinandan Bhattacharjee, Patrick Folge, Laura Serino +3 more

Spectrally pure and indistinguishable single photons are essential for quantum network platforms, where high-visibility interference underpins many quantum information protocols. However, most practical single-photon sources emit spectrally multimode states with reduced purity. Conventional spectral intensity filtering can partially improve purity but cannot select a well-defined temporal mode (TM). Here, we demonstrate coherent temporal filtering of a multimode parametric down-conversion (PDC) source using a quantum pulse gate (QPG) and benchmark its performance against conventional intensity filtering. The generated PDC photons exhibit strong spectral correlations, rendering extraction of pure heralded photons from the pair a challenge. We demonstrate that QPG filtering consistently generates heralded photons with purities above 0.90 regardless of the filter shape. Contrariwise, using spectral intensity filters yields mixed photons. Photon purities are probed with chronocyclic Q-function tomography. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of QPG filtering by extracting structured TMs, including superposition of picosecond time bins. These results establish the QPG as a practical coherent filtering tool for quantum network applications.

Independent high-purity photons created in domain-engineered crystals

Francesco Graffitti, Peter Barrow, Massimiliano Proietti +2 more

Advanced photonic quantum technology relies on multi-photon interference which requires bright sources of high-purity single photons. Here, we implement a novel domain-engineering technique for tailoring the nonlinearity of a parametric down-conversion crystal. We create pairs of independently-heralded telecom-wavelength photons and achieve high heralding, brightness and spectral purities without filtering.
