Abstract

Spectrally pure and indistinguishable single photons are essential for quantum network platforms, where high-visibility interference underpins many quantum information protocols. However, most practical single-photon sources emit spectrally multimode states with reduced purity. Conventional spectral intensity filtering can partially improve purity but cannot select a well-defined temporal mode (TM). Here, we demonstrate coherent temporal filtering of a multimode parametric down-conversion (PDC) source using a quantum pulse gate (QPG) and benchmark its performance against conventional intensity filtering. The generated PDC photons exhibit strong spectral correlations, rendering extraction of pure heralded photons from the pair a challenge. We demonstrate that QPG filtering consistently generates heralded photons with purities above 0.90 regardless of the filter shape. Contrariwise, using spectral intensity filters yields mixed photons. Photon purities are probed with chronocyclic Q-function tomography. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of QPG filtering by extracting structured TMs, including superposition of picosecond time bins. These results establish the QPG as a practical coherent filtering tool for quantum network applications.

Two-photon time-frequency entanglement is a valuable resource in quantum information. Resolving the wavepacket of ultrashort pulsed single-photons, however, is a challenge. Here, we demonstrate remote spectral shaping of single photon states and probe the coherence properties of two-photon quantum correlations in the time-frequency domain, using engineered parametric down-conversion (PDC) and a quantum pulse gate (QPG) in nonlinear waveguides. Through tailoring the joint spectral amplitude function of our PDC source we control the temporal mode structure between the generated photon pairs and show remote state-projections over a range of time-frequency mode superpositions.

Temporal-mode measurement tomography of a quantum pulse gate

Vahid Ansari, Georg Harder, Markus Allgaier +2 more

Encoding quantum information in the photon temporal mode (TM) offers a robust platform for high-dimensional quantum protocols. The main practical challenge, however, is to design a device that operates on single photons in specific TMs and all coherent superpositions. The quantum pulse gate (QPG) is a mode-selective sum-frequency generation designed for this task. Here, we perform a full modal characterization of a QPG using weak coherent states in well-defined TMs. We reconstruct a full set of measurement operators, which show an average fidelity of 0.85 to a theoretically ideal device when operating on a seven-dimensional space. Then we use these characterized measurement operators of the QPG to calibrate the device. Using the calibrated device and a tomographically complete set of measurements, we show that the QPG can perform high-dimensional TM state tomography with 0.99 fidelity.

Theory of filtered type-II parametric down-conversion: A method for single-mode EPR-entanglement generation

Andreas Christ, Cosmo Lupo, Matthias Reichelt +2 more

Parametric down-conversion (PDC) forms one of the basic building blocks for quantum optical experiments. However, the intrinsic multimode spectral-temporal structure of pulsed PDC often poses a severe hindrance for the direct implementation of the heralding of pure single photon states or, for example, continuous-variable entanglement distillation experiments. To get rid of multimode effects narrowband frequency filtering is frequently applied to achieve a single-mode behaviour. To date, the theoretical models of filtered PDC, however, only account for filtering in the low gain regime, where only a few photon-pairs are emitted at any single point in time. In this paper we extend these theoretical descriptions and present a rigorous theoretical model for filtered type-II PDC. Our theoretical investigations reveal that filtering a multimode type-II PDC state, followed by a careful optimization of the measurement basis, effectively achieves a single-mode behaviour and further enables the generation of single-mode EPR-entanglement. Considering the ever increasing brightness of PDC sources our developed theoretical framework, enables the accurate description of filtered PDC in quantum optical experiments.

Theory of filtered type-II parametric down-conversion in the continuous-variable domain: Quantifying the impacts of filtering

To date, the theoretical models of filtered PDC are rooted in the discrete-variable domain and only account for filtering in the low-gain regime, where only a few photon pairs are emitted at any single point in time. In this paper we extend these theoretical descriptions and put forward a simple model, which is able to accurately describe the effects of filtering on PDC in the continuous-variable domain. This developed straightforward theoretical framework enables us to accurately quantify the tradeoff between suppression of higher-order modes, reduced purity, and lowered Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen entanglement, when narrowband filters are applied to multimode type-II PDC.

Heralded generation of high-purity ultrashort single photons in arbitrary temporal shapes

Vahid Ansari, Emanuele Roccia, Matteo Santandrea +9 more

We experimentally demonstrate a source of nearly pure single photons in arbitrary temporal shapes heralded from a parametric down-conversion (PDC) source at telecom wavelengths. The technology is enabled by the tailored dispersion of in-house fabricated waveguides with shaped pump pulses to directly generate the PDC photons in on-demand temporal shapes. We generate PDC photons in Hermite-Gauss and frequency-binned modes and confirm a minimum purity of 0.81, even for complex temporal shapes.

Temporal-mode tomography of single photons

Accessing a high dimensional Hilbert space spanned by temporal modes (TMs) of single-photons is an intriguing idea for quantum information protocols, though it is experimentally challenging. The quantum pulse gate (QPG), a group-velocity matched sum-frequency process, can perform arbitrary TM resolved measurement. We present a thorough characterisation of measurement operators of a QPG and we show that this device is capable of performing full state tomography with 99% fidelity. Moreover, we use this device for TM tomography of pure and mixed heralded single-photon states in 7-dimensional Hilbert space.
