Optimizing Quantum Key Distribution Protocols using Decoy State Techniques and Experimental Validation

Sellami Ali, Benlahcene Djaouida

This paper simulated the operation of vacuum state and single decoy state protocols in the BB84 and SARG04 QKD schemes by utilizing the features of the commercial ID-3000 QKD system. Numerical modeling identified an optimal signal-to-decoy state ratio of 0.95:0.05 and an intensity of μ=0.85 for the signal state and ν1=0.05 for the decoy state, ensuring the highest key generation rate and a secure distance of up to 50 km. These protocols were validated experimentally over various transmission distances with standard telecom fiber, using the ID-3000 QKD system in a conventional bi-directional plug-and-play setup. Simulations predicted secure key rates of 1.2 × 10 5 bits/s for SARG04 and 8.5 × 104 bits/s for BB84 at 10 km, with secure distances of 45 km and 35 km, respectively. The experimental results confirmed these predictions, showing a 30% higher key rate and 20% longer secure distance compared to non-decoy methods. The SARG04 protocol surpassed BB84 in key rate and secure distance, highlighting the two-photon component's role in key generation. This study concludes that the decoy-state method significantly enhances key generation rates and secure distances, optimizing QKD protocols for secure quantum communication.

Optimizing Decoy‐State Protocols for Practical Quantum Key Distribution Systems

Guan‐Jie Fan‐Yuan, Ze‐Hao Wang, Shuang Wang +5 more

Abstract The decoy‐state protocol enables quantum key distribution (QKD) systems to achieve high performance without using the single‐photon source. In the dozen years since the decoy‐state protocol has been proposed, a series of advances in scheme design, finite‐size analysis, system modelling, and parameter estimation has developed. Unfortunately, most advances are based on different starting points and lack a synthesis to figure out the optimal protocol of decoy‐state method. Here, the advances in decoy‐state method are reviewed and they are synthesized to compare the key‐rate performance of 38 decoy‐state protocols using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. To form a guideline for practical QKD systems, the optimal decoy‐state protocols are found with the change of five system parameters (the transmission loss, the block size of postprocessing, the misalignment‐error probability, the dark‐count probability, and the afterpulse rate). It is expected that this work can answer the questions of what the actual performance is for different decoy‐state protocol in various scenarios and which decoy‐state protocol is the optimal choice for various QKD systems.

Optimized decoy state QKD for underwater free space communication

Minal Lopes, Nisha Sarwade

Quantum cryptography (QC) is envisioned as a solution for global key distribution through fiber optic, free space and underwater optical communication due to its unconditional security. In view of this, this paper investigates underwater free space quantum key distribution (QKD) model for enhanced transmission distance, secret key rates and security. It is reported that secure underwater free space QKD is feasible in the clearest ocean water with the sifted key rates up to 207[Formula: see text]kbps. This paper extends this work by testing performance of optimized decoy state QKD protocol with underwater free space communication model. The attenuation of photons, quantum bit error rate and the sifted key generation rate of underwater quantum communication is obtained with vector radiative transfer theory and Monte Carlo method. It is observed from the simulations that optimized decoy state QKD evidently enhances the underwater secret key transmission distance as well as secret key rates.
