Interpolating Binary and Multivalued Logical Quantum Gates

Abstract

A method for synthesizing quantum gates is presented based on interpolation methods applied to operators in Hilbert space. Starting from the diagonal forms of specific generating seed operators with non-degenerate eigenvalue spectrum one obtains for arity-one a complete family of logical operators corresponding to all the one-argument logical connectives. Scaling-up to n-arity gates is obtained by using the Kronecker product and unitary transformations. The quantum version of the Fourier transform of Boolean functions is presented and a Reed-Muller decomposition for quantum logical gates is derived. The common control gates can be easily obtained by considering the logical correspondence between the control logic operator and the binary logic operator. A new polynomial and exponential formulation of the Toffoli gate is presented. The method has parallels to quantum gate-T optimization methods using powers of multilinear operator polynomials. The method is then applied naturally to alphabets greater than two for multi-valued logical gates used for quantum Fourier transform, min-max decision circuits and multivalued adders.

Multi-strategy based quantum cost reduction of quantum boolean circuits

Taghreed Ahmed, Ahmed Younes, Islam Elkabani

Abstract The construction of quantum computers is based on the synthesis of low-cost quantum circuits. The quantum circuit of any Boolean function expressed in a Positive Polarity Reed-Muller (PPRM) expansion can be synthesized using Multiple-Control Toffoli (MCT) gates. This paper proposes two algorithms to construct a quantum circuit for any Boolean function expressed in a PPRM expansion. The Boolean function can be expressed with various algebraic forms, so there are different quantum circuits can be synthesized for the Boolean function based on its algebraic form. The proposed algorithms aim to map the MCT gates into the NCV gates for any quantum circuit by generating a simple algebraic form for the Boolean function. The first algorithm generates a special algebraic form for any Boolean function by rearrangement of terms of the Boolean function according to a predefined degree of term d term , then synthesizes the corresponding quantum circuit. The second algorithm applies the decomposition methods to decompose MCT circuit into its elementary gates followed by applying a set of simplification rules to simplify and optimize the synthesized quantum circuit. The proposed algorithms achieve a reduction in the quantum cost of synthesized quantum circuits when compared with relevant work in the literature. The proposed algorithms synthesize quantum circuits that can applied on IBM quantum computer.

A Method to Synthesize Boolean Quantum Circuit Based on Reed-Muller Expansions

Shengchao Ding, Zhi Hao Jin

This paper presents how to synthesize efficient Boolean quantum circuits (BQC) from Reed-Muller (RM) expansions of Boolean functions. Firstly, the method of Younes et al [A. Younes and J. F. Miller, International Journal of Electronics 91, 431 (2004)] is generalized to synthesize BQC for multiple outputs function. The transformation is straightforward. A technique rearranging the modified Toffoli gates is also presented to eliminate additive NOT gates as much as possible. Secondly, the approach synthesizing BQC without work qubits is proposed which is simple and high-efficient. The necessary conditions for the RM expansions which can be synthesized by the proposed method are derived too.

Optimal synthesis of multiple output Boolean functions using a set of quantum gates by symbolic reachability analysis

William N. N. Hung, Xiaoyu Song B, Guowu Yang +2 more

This paper proposes an approach to optimally synthesize quantum circuits by symbolic reachability analysis, where the primary inputs and outputs are basis binary and the internal signals can be nonbinary in a multiple-valued domain. The authors present an optimal synthesis method to minimize quantum cost and some speedup methods with nonoptimal quantum cost. The methods here are applicable to small reversible functions. Unlike previous works that use permutative reversible gates, a lower level library that includes nonpermutative quantum gates is used here. The proposed approach obtains the minimum cost quantum circuits for Miller gate, half adder, and full adder, which are better than previous results. This cost is minimum for any circuit using the set of quantum gates in this paper, where the control qubit of 2-qubit gates is always basis binary. In addition, the minimum quantum cost in the same manner for Fredkin, Peres, and Toffoli gates is proven. The method can also find the best conversion from an irreversible function to a reversible circuit as a byproduct of the generality of its formulation, thus synthesizing in principle arbitrary multi-output Boolean functions with quantum gate library. This paper constitutes the first successful experience of applying formal methods and satisfiability to quantum logic synthesis.

Quantum logic synthesis by symbolic reachability analysis

William N. N. Hung, Xiaoyu Song B, Guowu Yang +2 more

Reversible quantum logic plays an important role in quantum computing. In this paper, we propose an approach to optimally synthesize quantum circuits by symbolic reachability analysis where the primary inputs are purely binary. we use symbolic reachability analysis, a technique most commonly used in model checking (a way of formal verification), to synthesize the optimum quantum circuits. We present an exact synthesis method with optimal quantum cost and a speedup method with non-optimal quantum cost. Both our methods guarantee the synthesizeability of all reversible circuits. Unlike previous works which use permutative reversible gates, we use a lower level library which includes non-permutative quantum gates. For the first time, problems in quantum logic synthesis have been reduced to those of multiple-valued logic synthesis thus reducing the search space and algorithm complexity. We synthesized quantum circuits for gate, half-adder, full-adder, etc. with the smallest cost.. Our approach obtains the minimum cost quantum circuits for Miller's gate, half-adder, and full-adder, which are better than previous results. In addition, we prove the minimum quantum cost (using our elementary quantum gates) for Fredkin, Peres, and Toffoli gates. Our work constitutes the first successful experience of applying satisfiability with formal methods to quantum logic synthesis.

Reversible logic synthesis by quantum rotation gates

Afshin Abdollahi, Mehdi Saeedi, Massoud Pedram

A rotation-based synthesis framework for reversible logic is proposed. We develop a canonical representation based on binary decision diagrams and introduce operators to manipulate the developed representation model. Furthermore, a recursive functional bi-decomposition approach is proposed to automatically synthesize a given function. While Boolean reversible logic is particularly addressed, our framework constructs intermediate quantum states that may be in superposition, hence we combine techniques from reversible Boolean logic and quantum computation. {The proposed approach results in quadratic gate count for multiple-control Toffoli gates without ancillae, linear depth for quantum carry-ripple adder, and $O(n\log^2 n)$ size for quantum multiplexer.
