Abstract

Squeezed states of light are referred to as non-classical field states and are known to be characterized by strong correlations between photons both in the spectral and spatial domain. For these reasons they are very perspective for many important and interesting practical applications in modern quantum optics including storage and transfer of quantum information. From this point of view multiphoton or bright squeezed vacuum states of light generated during stimulated parametric down conversion process with intensive pump seem to be the most attractive.

Light generated through strongly pumped parametric down-conversion has extremely strong photon-number fluctuations and is therefore highly efficient for multiphoton effects. In addition, its spectral and spatial properties can be tailored to allow two-dimensional multiphoton spectroscopy.

Strong Field Electron Emission Driven by a Bright Squeezed Vacuum

Andrei Rasputnyi, Jonas Heimerl, Jonathan Pölloth +4 more

The extreme light-matter interaction has brought unique tools for the subfemtosecond control of electron dynamics [1] and ultra-fast spectroscopy [2]. Until recently, the strong-field regime was accessible only with coherent states of light, which can be well described by classical electric fields when many photons are present (Fig. 1a). With the use of intense states of non-classical light, this situation has changed. New opportunities emerge with bright squeezed vacuum (BSV), which can be generated from optical parametric amplification of quantum vacuum fluctuations. Unlike classical light, BSV is a quantum superposition of coherent states with an amplitudes spanning a range from zero to very high values, up to ~1 TW/cm2[3]. BSV has a zero mean electric field and the variance of the electric field oscillates at the double carrier frequency (Fig. 1a). How such a non-classical electric field can affect the dynamics of photoemitted electrons was theoretically demonstrated recently [4]. Furthermore, the photon-number distribution of BSV has a very long tail in contrast to coherent light. These photon-number distributions can be imprinted onto the photon statistics of optical harmonics [3] and the statistics of electrons [5].

Frequency-domain engineering of bright squeezed vacuum for continuous-variable quantum information

Inbar Hurvitz, Aviv Karnieli, Ady Arie

Multimode bright squeezed vacuum is a non-classical state of light hosting a macroscopic photon number while offering promising capacity for encoding quantum information in its spectral degree of freedom. Here, we employ an accurate model for parametric down-conversion in the high-gain regime and use nonlinear holography to design quantum correlations of bright squeezed vacuum in the frequency domain. We propose the design of quantum correlations over two-dimensional lattice geometries that are all-optically controlled, paving the way toward continuous-variable cluster state generation on an ultrafast timescale. Specifically, we investigate the generation of a square cluster state in the frequency domain and calculate its covariance matrix and the quantum nullifier uncertainties, that exhibit squeezing below the vacuum noise level.

Bright squeezed-vacuum source with 11 spatial mode

Angela M. Pérez, T. Sh. Iskhakov, Polina R. Sharapova +4 more

Bright squeezed vacuum, a macroscopic nonclassical state of light, can be obtained at the output of a strongly pumped nonseeded traveling-wave optical parametric amplifier (OPA). By constructing the OPA of two consecutive crystals separated by a large distance, we make the squeezed vacuum spatially single-mode without a significant decrease in the brightness or squeezing.

Bright squeezed vacuum in a nonlinear interferometer: Frequency and temporal Schmidt-mode description

Polina R. Sharapova, Olga V. Tikhonova, Samuel Lemieux +2 more

Control over the spectral properties of the bright squeezed vacuum (BSV), a highly multimode nonclassical macroscopic state of light that can be generated through high-gain parametric down conversion, is crucial for many applications. In particular, in several recent experiments BSV is generated in a strongly pumped SU(1,1) interferometer to achieve phase supersensitivity, perform broadband homodyne detection, or tailor the frequency spectrum of squeezed light. In this work, we present an analytical approach to the theoretical description of BSV in the frequency domain based on the Bloch-Messiah reduction and the Schmidt-mode formalism. As a special case we consider a strongly pumped SU(1,1) interferometer. We show that different moments of the radiation at its output depend on the phase, dispersion, and the parametric gain in a nontrivial way, thereby providing additional insights on the capabilities of nonlinear interferometers. In particular, a dramatic change in the spectrum occurs as the parametric gain increases.
