Abstract

Internet of things (IoT) is going to be an integral part of our lives in the next few years. It will be found as direct service provider in our surroundings through the connected sensor based networks. Even indirectly, it will serve us in several forms as value added services over the cellular platforms. However, it is very much vulnerable from several security threats. The current security level is not very strong for the future applications of IoT. There is a need of a robust cryptosystem for IoT. In this article, we propose quantum cryptography as a security solution for IoT in the long term. We explain the motivation behind this idea and the potential applications in IoT in the near future.

Quantum Cryptography for Secure Data Transmission in IoT Networks

Sulakshana Sagar Malwade

The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) has introduced significant security challenges, especially in safeguarding sensitive data transmitted across vast networks. Traditional cryptographic methods, though widely used, face increasing vulnerabilities in light of advancements in quantum computing. This research explores the application of quantum cryptography, particularly Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), to secure data transmission in IoT networks. Quantum cryptography offers a revolutionary approach by utilizing the principles of quantum mechanics, ensuring communication channels are resistant to eavesdropping and quantum attacks. Despite its promise, integrating quantum cryptography into resource-constrained IoT environments presents several technical challenges. This paper examines current quantum cryptographic techniques, their feasibility for IoT applications, and proposed solutions for overcoming integration hurdles. Case studies of real-world implementations and experimental results are discussed to highlight the effectiveness of these methods. The findings suggest that quantum cryptography, while still in its infancy for IoT, has the potential to provide robust security solutions in future networks.

Influence of Quantum Computing on IoT Using Modern Algorithms

Zainab Salih Ageed, Subhi R. M. Zeebaree, Rezgar Hasan Saeed

Even while the Internet of Things (IoT) already affects our day-to-day activities, its future relevance and potential for transformation remain untapped. Security issues with present communications technology must be solved before secure end-to-end connection between services can be achieved. Internet of Things (IoT) is here to stay. In the next years, it will become an integral part of our everyday life. There is a good chance that sensor-based networks can recognize it as a direct service provider in our surroundings. Even if it's just in the form of a value-added service delivered through cellular networks, it's going to be helpful nevertheless. It is, nevertheless, subject to a wide range of security threats. The current level of security is insufficient for IoT applications in the future. A secure cryptosystem is needed for the Internet of Things. quantum-based security has seen a surge of attention recently. Additional quantum key distribution systems and network services are now supported by this solution. As a result of the quantum computing's unrivaled security level, it has become more popular in recent years. Because every measurement must affect the state of the quantum bit being sent, quantum physics dictates that this must be the case. Regardless of whether the sender or recipient is aware of the change, it is clear. It is thus no longer possible to listen passively. Polarized photons may encode a string of bits using protocols like BB84. Secure cryptographic keys may be generated over an unsafe channel utilizing various key distillation procedures.

Securing IoT in the Post-Quantum Era: Implementation, Challenges, and Future Directions

Muhammad Asghar Khan, Muhammad Attique Khan

The Internet of Things (IoT) is involved in almost every industry, paving the way for innovative applications, including smart cities, intelligent systems, smart homes, smart agriculture, healthcare, and more. However, due to their asset value, these applications are under continuous and evolving cyberattacks. Furthermore, the advent of quantum computing presents a severe threat to traditional cryptographic methods that typically secure IoT systems, potentially rendering existing security mechanisms ineffective against quantum-enabled attacks. To tackle quantum-enabled and traditional cyberattacks, post-quantum cryptography (PQC) has emerged as a promising solution for providing future-proof security for IoT devices and networks against the quantum computing threat. PQC algorithms can resist cyberattacks from classical and quantum computers, ensuring long-term security solutions. This article explores the integration of PQC into practical IoT systems. It highlights the vulnerabilities of classical cryptographic methods and the necessity of transitioning to quantum-resistant solutions. Moreover, the implementation of PQC on IoT systems is analyzed. By proactively exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with PQC, this research lays out future directions for implementing robust, scalable, and secure IoT systems.

Moussa Diop, Papis Ndiaye, Doudou Dione +1 more

The Internet of Things (IoT) has grown rapidly, transforming various aspects of daily life into intelligent systems capable of collecting and exchanging data in real time. At the same time, advances in quantum computing have given rise to powerful quantum computers capable of processing complex tasks at unprecedented speed. This disparity between the limited resources of IoT devices and the capabilities of quantum computers poses significant security challenges. Quantum computers introduce new vulnerabilities that threaten IoT systems, particularly in critical applications such as connected healthcare, industrial networks, smart infrastructure, and secure embedded systems. This study reviews the existing literature on post-quantum cryptography (PQC) applied to IoT devices. It analyzes the characteristics and security requirements of IoT environments, current security technologies, and unresolved issues. It highlights the growing threat of post-quantum attacks and the need to adapt security strategies. Finally, the study explores post-quantum code-based cryptosystems as solutions to enhance the security of resource-constrained IoT applications and ensure their resilience against future challenges.

Quantum Cryptography for Internet of Things Security

Alekha Parimal Bhatt, Anand Sharma

Internet of things (IoT) is a developing technology with a lot of scope in the future. It can ease various different tasks for us. On one hand, IoT is useful for us, on the other hand, it has many serious security threats, like data breaches, side-channel attacks, and virus and data authentication. Classical cryptographic algorithms, like the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) algorithm, work well under the classical computers. But the technology is slowly shifting towards quantum computing, which has immense processing power and is more than enough to break the current cryptographic algorithms easily. So it is required that we have to design quantum cryptographic algorithms to prevent our systems from security breaches even before quantum computers come in the market for commercial uses. IoT will also be one of the disciplines, which needs to be secured to prevent any malicious activities. In this paper, we review the common security threats in IoT and the presently available solutions with their drawbacks. Then quantum cryptography is introduced with some of its variations. And finally, the analysis has been carried out in terms of the pros and cons of implementing quantum cryptography for IoT security.
