Topological aspects of a fermion, chiral anomaly, and Berry phase

Dipti Banerjee, Pratul Bandyopadhyay

The relationship of the Berry phase with the topological aspects of a fermion and chiral anomaly is studied here. It is observed that this phase reflects the effect of quantum geometry when the quantization procedure of a Fermi field is considered from a classical system and may be considered as the manifestation of the multiply connected nature of quantum space-time.

We study and present the results of Berry connection for the topological states in quantum matter. The Berry connection plays a central role in the geometric phase and topological phenomenon in quantum many-body system. We present the necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize the topological nature of the system through the complex analysis. We also present the different topological aspects of the system in the momentum space.

Berry’s phase for atomic levels

Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy

The ground-state hyperfine structure of atomic states is shown to exhibit interesting new aspects of the topological phase discovered by M. V. Berry [Proc. R. Soc. London, Ser. A 392, 45 (1984)]. In particular, although a nontrivial topological phase exists, monopoles are absent. A possible experiment to probe these aspects is discussed.
