Initial correlation in a system of a spin coupled to a spin bath through an intermediate spin

Abstract

The strong system-bath correlation is a typical initial condition in many condensed matter and some quantum optical systems. Here, the dynamics of a spin interacting with a spin bath through an intermediate spin are studied. Initial correlations between the spin and the intermediate spin are taken into account. The exact analytical expression for the evolution operator of the spin is found. Furthermore, correlated projection superoperator techniques are applied to the model and a time-convolutionless master equation to second order is derived. It is shown that the time-convolutionless master equation to second order reproduces the exact dynamics for time scales of the order $1/\ensuremath{\gamma},$ where $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ is the coupling of the central spin to the intermediate spin. It is found that there is a strong dependence on the initial system-bath correlations in the dynamics of the reduced system, which cannot be neglected.

Correlated projection operator approach to non-Markovian dynamics in spin baths

Jan Fischer, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

The dynamics of an open quantum system is usually studied by performing a weak-coupling and weak-correlation expansion in the system-bath interaction. For systems exhibiting strong couplings and highly non-Markovian behavior this approach is not justified. We apply a recently proposed correlated projection superoperator technique to the model of a central spin coupled to a spin bath via full Heisenberg interaction. Analytical solutions to both the Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless master equation are determined and compared with the results of the exact solution. The correlated projection operator technique significantly improves the standard methods and can be applied to many physical problems such as the hyperfine interaction in a quantum dot.

Arbitrary spin in a spin bath: Exact dynamics and approximation techniques

Vitalii Semin, Ilya Sinayskiy, Francesco Petruccione

A model of an arbitrary spin coupled to a bath of spins $\frac{1}{2}$ in a star configuration is considered. The exact reduced dynamics of the central spin is found for the case of noncorrelated initial conditions of the system and the bath. The exact solution is used to test two approximation techniques, namely, the Nakajima-Zwanzig projection operator technique and the time-convolutionless projection operator technique corresponding to the second order of the coupling constant. Two types of projection operators are used for deriving the master equations, and the results are compared with the exact solution for a central spin equal to one. It is shown that the approximate master equations reproduce the exact dynamics on time scales $1/(A\sqrt{N})$, where $A$ is the coupling constant and $N$ is the number of spins in the bath.

Influence of initial correlations on evolution over time of an open quantum system

Victor F. Los

A novel approach to accounting for the influence of initial system-bath correlations on the dynamics of an open quantum system, based on the conventional projection operator technique, is suggested. To avoid the difficulties of treating the initial correlations, the conventional Nakajima-Zwanzig inhomogeneous generalized master equations (GMEs) for a system's reduced statistical operator and correlation function are exactly converted into the homogeneous GMEs (HGMEs), which take into account the initial correlations in the kernel governing the evolution of these HGMEs. In the second order (Born) approximation in the system-bath interaction, the obtained HGMEs are local in time and valid at all timescales. They are further specialized for a realistic equilibrium Gibbs initial (at $t=t_0$) system+bath state (for a system reduced statistical operator an external force at $t>t_0$ is applied) and then for a bath of oscillators (Boson field). As an example, the evolution of a selected quantum oscillator (a localized mode) interacting with a Boson field (Fano-like model) is considered at different timescales. It is shown explicitly how the initial correlations influence the oscillator evolution process. In particular, it is shown that the equilibrium system's correlation function acquires at the large timescale the additional constant phase factor conditioned by survived initial system-bath correlations.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit coupled to an Ising spin bath

Hari Krovi, Ognyan Oreshkov, Mikhail Ryazanov +1 more

We study the analytically solvable Ising model of a single qubit system coupled to a spin bath. The purpose of this study is to analyze and elucidate the performance of Markovian and non-Markovian master equations describing the dynamics of the system qubit, in comparison to the exact solution. We find that the time-convolutionless master equation performs particularly well up to fourth order in the system-bath coupling constant, in comparison to the Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation. Markovian approaches fare poorly due to the infinite bath correlation time in this model. A recently proposed post-Markovian master equation performs comparably to the time-convolutionless master equation for a properly chosen memory kernel, and outperforms all the approximation methods considered here at long times. Our findings shed light on the applicability of master equations to the description of reduced system dynamics in the presence of spin baths.

Non-Markovian master equation for the XX central spin model

Elena Ferraro, Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Anna Napoli +2 more

The non-Markovian correlated projection operator technique is applied to the model of a central spin coupled to a spin bath through non uniform XX Heisenberg coupling. The second order results of the Nakajima-Zwanzig and of the time-convolutionless methods are compared with the exact solution considering a fully polarized initial bath state.

Decoherence of a single spin coupled to an interacting spin bath

Ning Wu, Nina Fröhling, Xing Xi +4 more

Decoherence of a central spin coupled to an interacting spin bath via inhomogeneous Heisenberg coupling is studied by two different approaches, namely an exact equations of motion (EOMs) method and a Chebyshev expansion technique (CET). By assuming a wheel topology of the bath spins with uniform nearest-neighbor $XX$-type intrabath coupling, we examine the central spin dynamics with the bath prepared in two different types of bath initial conditions. For fully polarized baths in strong magnetic fields, the polarization dynamics of the central spin exhibits a collapse-revival behavior in the intermediate-time regime. Under an antiferromagnetic bath initial condition, the two methods give excellently consistent central spin decoherence dynamics for finite-size baths of $N\ensuremath{\le}14$ bath spins. The decoherence factor is found to drop off abruptly on a short time scale and approach a finite plateau value which depends on the intrabath coupling strength nonmonotonically. In the ultrastrong intrabath coupling regime, the plateau values show an oscillatory behavior depending on whether $N/2$ is even or odd. The observed results are interpreted qualitatively within the framework of the EOM and perturbation analysis. The effects of anisotropic spin-bath coupling and inhomogeneous intrabath bath couplings are briefly discussed. Possible experimental realization of the model in a modified quantum corral setup is suggested.
