Abstract

We study the analytically solvable Ising model of a single qubit system coupled to a spin bath. The purpose of this study is to analyze and elucidate the performance of Markovian and non-Markovian master equations describing the dynamics of the system qubit, in comparison to the exact solution. We find that the time-convolutionless master equation performs particularly well up to fourth order in the system-bath coupling constant, in comparison to the Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation. Markovian approaches fare poorly due to the infinite bath correlation time in this model. A recently proposed post-Markovian master equation performs comparably to the time-convolutionless master equation for a properly chosen memory kernel, and outperforms all the approximation methods considered here at long times. Our findings shed light on the applicability of master equations to the description of reduced system dynamics in the presence of spin baths.

Non-Markovian dissipative dynamics of two coupled qubits in independent reservoirs: Comparison between exact solutions and master-equation approaches

Elena Ferraro, M. Scala, Rosanna Migliore +1 more

The reduced dynamics of two interacting qubits coupled to two independent bosonic baths is investigated. The one-excitation dynamics is derived and compared with that based on the resolution of appropriate non-Markovian master equations. The Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless projection operator techniques are exploited to provide a description of the non-Markovian features of the dynamics of the two-qubit system. The validity of such approximate methods and their range of validity in correspondence to different choices of the parameters describing the system are brought to light.

On the validity of non-Markovian master equation approaches for the entanglement dynamics of two-qubit systems

Elena Ferraro, M. Scala, Rosanna Migliore +1 more

In the framework of the dissipative dynamics of coupled qubits interacting with independent reservoirs, a comparison between non-Markovian master equation techniques and an exact solution is presented here. We study various regimes in order to find the limits of validity of the Nakajima–Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless master equations in the description of the entanglement dynamics. A comparison between the performances of the concurrence and the negativity as entanglement measures for the system under study is also presented.

Exact master equations for the non-Markovian decay of a qubit

Bassano Vacchini, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

Exact master equations describing the decay of a two-state system into a structured reservoir are constructed. By employing the exact solution for the model, analytical expressions are determined for the memory kernel of the Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation and for the generator of the corresponding time-convolutionless master equation. This approach allows an explicit comparison of the convergence behavior of the corresponding perturbation expansions. Moreover, the structure of widely used phenomenological master equations with a memory kernel may be incompatible with a nonperturbative treatment of the underlying microscopic model. Several physical implications of the results on the microscopic analysis and the phenomenological modeling of non-Markovian quantum dynamics of open systems are discussed.

Markovian and non-Markovian master equations versus an exactly solvable model of a qubit in a cavity

Zihan Xia, Juan Garcia-Nila, Daniel A. Lidar

Quantum master equations are commonly used to model the dynamics of open quantum systems, but their accuracy is rarely compared with the analytical solution of exactly solvable models. In this work, we perform such a comparison for the damped Jaynes-Cummings model of a qubit in a leaky cavity, for which an analytical solution is available in the one-excitation subspace. We consider the non-Markovian time-convolutionless master equation up to the second (Redfield) and fourth orders as well as three types of Markovian master equations: the coarse-grained, cumulant, and standard rotating-wave approximation (RWA) Lindblad equations. We compare the exact solution to these master equations for three different spectral densities: impulse, Ohmic, and triangular. We demonstrate that the coarse-grained master equation outperforms the standard RWA-based Lindblad master equation for weak coupling or high qubit frequency (relative to the spectral density high-frequency cutoff ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$), where the Markovian approximation is valid. In the presence of non-Markovian effects characterized by oscillatory, nondecaying behavior, the time-convolutionless approximation closely matches the exact solution for short evolution times (in units of ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$) even outside the regime of validity of the Markovian approximations. For long evolution times, all master equations perform poorly, as quantified in terms of the trace-norm distance from the exact solution. The fourth-order time-convolutionless master equation achieves the top performance in all cases. Our results highlight the need for reliable approximation methods to describe open-system quantum dynamics beyond the short-time limit.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit

Sabrina Maniscalco, Francesco Petruccione

In this paper we investigate the non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit by comparing two generalized master equations with memory. In the case of a thermal bath, we derive the solution of the recently proposed post-Markovian master equation [A. Shabani and D. A. Lidar, Phys. Rev. A 71, 020101(R) (2005)] and we study the dynamics for an exponentially decaying memory kernel. We compare the solution of the post-Markovian master equation with the solution of the typical memory kernel master equation. Our results lead to a new physical interpretation of the reservoir correlation function and bring to light the limits of usability of master equations with memory for the system under consideration.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit in a reservoir: different solutions of non-Markovian master equation

Bang-Fu Ding, Xiao-Yun Wang, Yan-Fang Tang +2 more

We present a non-Markovian master equation for a qubit interacting with a general reservoir, which is derived according to the Nakajima—Zwanzig and the time convolutionless projection operator technique. The non-Markovian solutions and Markovian solution of dynamical decay of a qubit are compared. The results indicate the validity of non-Markovian approach in different coupling regimes and also show that the Markovian master equation may not precisely describe the dynamics of an open quantum system in some situation. The non-Markovian solutions may be effective for many qubits independently interacting with the heated reservoirs.
