Adaptive experimental design for one-qubit state estimation with finite data based on a statistical update criterion

Takanori Sugiyama, Peter S. Turner, Mio Murao

We consider 1-qubit mixed quantum state estimation by adaptively updating measurements according to previously obtained outcomes and measurement settings. Updates are determined by the average-variance--optimality (A-optimality) criterion, known in the classical theory of experimental design and applied here to quantum state estimation. In general, A optimization is a nonlinear minimization problem; however, we find an analytic solution for 1-qubit state estimation using projective measurements, reducing computational effort. We compare numerically the performances of two adaptive and two nonadaptive schemes for finite data sets and show that the A-optimality criterion gives more precise estimates than standard quantum tomography.

Optimal experiment design for quantum state tomography: Fair, precise, and minimal tomography

J. Nunn, Brian J. Smith, Graciana Puentes +2 more

Given an experimental setup and a fixed number of measurements, how should one take data to optimally reconstruct the state of a quantum system? The problem of optimal experiment design (OED) for quantum state tomography was first broached by Kosut et al. [R. Kosut, I. Walmsley, and H. Rabitz, e-print arXiv:quant-ph/0411093 (2004)]. Here we provide efficient numerical algorithms for finding the optimal design, and analytic results for the case of `minimal tomography'. We also introduce the average OED, which is independent of the state to be reconstructed, and the optimal design for tomography (ODT), which minimizes tomographic bias. Monte Carlo simulations confirm the utility of our results for qubits. Finally, we adapt our approach to deal with constrained techniques such as maximum-likelihood estimation. We find that these are less amenable to optimization than cruder reconstruction methods, such as linear inversion.

Quantum Phase Estimation: A Novel Adaptive Optimization Algorithm for Quantum State Estimation

Jincheng Zhang

Quantum phase estimation (QPE) is a fundamental technique for determining the phase of a quantum state, crucial for various quantum algorithms and quantum measurements. This paper introduces a novel adaptive optimization algorithm, dubbed the "Adaptive Quantum Phase Estimation" (AQPE) algorithm, designed to enhance the efficiency of QPE by dynamically adjusting parameters during the state estimation process. We demonstrate the effectiveness of AQPE through rigorous theoretical analysis and extensive numerical simulations, achieving significantly improved convergence rates compared to traditional optimization techniques. The algorithm leverages a feedback mechanism based on the observed phase error during the estimation, allowing it to iteratively refine the parameter set and ultimately locate the optimal phase estimation. We present preliminary results demonstrating the algorithm's capability to mitigate the challenges associated with conventional QPE, particularly in the presence of noisy data. The implications of this research extend to broader advancements in quantum algorithm design and computational power.
