Abstract

The effect field polarization has on the amplitude of recoil-induced resonances is considered for laser-cooled free atoms and for atoms in an operating magneto-optical trap. Explicit analytical expressions for the polarization dependence of resonance amplitudes in perturbation theory are obtained for all closed dipole transitions. Optimum conditions of polarization are found for the observation of resonances.

Polarization effects in recoil-induced resonances

Д. Б. Лазебный, Denis V. Brazhnikov, А. В. Тайченачев +1 more

The effect of the field polarization on the amplitude of recoil-induced resonances (RIRs) is considered for laser-cooled free atoms and for atoms in a working magneto-optical trap (MOT). For all closed dipole transitions, explicit analytical expressions are obtained for the polarization dependence of the resonance amplitudes within a perturbation theory. Optimal polarization conditions are found for the observation of resonances.

Magneto-optical force in a resonant field of elliptically polarized light waves

Прудников Олег Николаевич, А. В. Тайченачев, Anatolii M Tumaikin +1 more

In a one-dimensional model we consider the dependence of the magneto-optical force on the elliptical polarization of laser beams for different types of closed atomic transitions ${J}_{g}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{J}_{e}$. The linear dependencies on atomic velocity and magnetic field of the magneto-optical force are found analytically. These results establish the possibility (for ${J}_{g}>0$) to capture atoms in a magneto-optical trap even at zero detuning (i.e., at the exact resonance of atoms with laser field) in certain $(ϵ\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{-}\overline{ϵ})$ field configurations as well as in an anomalous blue-detuned region. The nonlinear dependencies of the force on atomic velocity and magnetic field are studied numerically. The capture velocity and the number of trapped atoms are estimated.

Observation of nonlinear optical recoil-induced resonances in a dark magneto-optical trap

P. L. Chapovsky

Nonlinear optical recoil-induced resonances have been observed in a gas of cold rubidium atoms trapped in a dark magneto-optical trap. These resonances are used to measure the temperature and velocity distribution of the cold atoms. The velocity distribution of the atoms in the dark magneto-optical trap has an excessive amount of fast atoms as compared to the Maxwell distribution and to the distribution in a standard magneto-optical trap.

Laser cooling limits in fields with a polarisation gradient of atoms with different recoil energies

Anastasia Kirpichnikova, Прудников Олег Николаевич, R. Ya. Ilenkov +2 more

Based on the numerical solution of the quantum kinetic equation for the atomic density matrix, which makes it possible to accurately take into account the recoil effects in the interaction of atoms with field photons, we have studied the limits of laser cooling of atoms using closed optical transitions characterised by different recoil parameters (the ratio of the recoil energy to the natural linewidth). It is shown that for optical transitions with an insufficiently small recoil parameter, the polarisation effects, which lead to the possibility of sub-Doppler laser cooling, lose their efficiency and do not ensure an attainment of the temperature below the Doppler limit. The analysis performed allows one to outline the boundaries of the sub-Doppler theory of laser cooling of atoms.

Recoil-induced resonances in pump-probe spectroscopy including effects of level degeneracy

Jingzhong Guo, P. R. Berman

Theoretical calculations are presented for the probe absorption spectra of atoms having magnetically degenerate ground states which are subjected to weak pump fields that produce spatial polarization gradients. Apart from the Raman resonance contribution to the spectrum which has been observed experimentally, we predict that additional resonant structures should appear as a result of the atomic recoil that occurs during the absorption or emission of radiation by the atoms. The width of the atomic recoil resonances is directly related to the Doppler width associated with the driven transition. For sub-Doppler cooled atoms, the width can be much narrower than the optical pumping rate that determines the width of the Raman signal.

DC-field-induced resonance and polarization effects in two-colour frequency mixing in atoms

Nikolai L. Manakov, Vitalii D Ovsiannikov, Nikolai L. Manakov

In a gas of free atoms interacting with a two-colour laser radiation, a DC electric field provides the necessary conditions for generation of sum-frequency radiation, together with a resonance enhancement of the frequency conversion process. The interference between the DC-field-induced and the dipole-forbidden three-photon amplitudes causes circular dichroism effects in the scattering of the sum-frequency photons at right angles to the incident laser beams. The DC-field-induced resonance effect is strongly dependent on the frequency detuning and the width of the resonant levels.
