Plasmonics and sensing beyond classical limits

Mark Tame, Changhyoup Lee

Optical sensors have applications in a range of settings, from measuring mechanical vibrations in manufacturing processes to biometrics in security devices and the detection of proteins and viruses in biomedical research. Many sensing approaches exist and plasmonic systems in particular have been studied extensively due to their ability to confine light below the diffraction limit, which greatly enhances their sensitivity compared to conventional approaches. Recently, various quantum techniques have been discovered that can outperform classical sensing ones and provide sensitivity beyond the shot-noise limit. The use of these quantum techniques in plasmonics for improving sensing performance is currently being explored. We study the performance of a plasmonic sensor that exploits the quantum nature of light and its highly confined field. We consider specialized quantum states and by comparison we show how each can provide improved sensitivity beyond the shot-noise limit.

Quantum Plasmonic Sensing: Beyond the Shot-Noise and Diffraction Limit

Changhyoup Lee, Frederik Dieleman, Jinhyoung Lee +3 more

Photonic sensors have many applications in a range of physical settings, from measuring mechanical pressure in manufacturing to detecting protein concentration in biomedical samples. A variety of sensing approaches exist, and plasmonic systems in particular have received much attention due to their ability to confine light below the diffraction limit, greatly enhancing sensitivity. Recently, quantum techniques have been identified that can outperform classical sensing methods and achieve sensitivity below the so-called shot-noise limit. Despite this significant potential, the use of definite photon number states in lossy plasmonic systems for further improving sensing capabilities is not well studied. Here, we investigate the sensing performance of a plasmonic interferometer that simultaneously exploits the quantum nature of light and its electromagnetic field confinement. We show that, despite the presence of loss, specialized quantum resources can provide improved sensitivity and resolution beyond the shot-noise limit within a compact plasmonic device operating below the diffraction limit.

Quantum Plasmonic Sensing Beyond the Classical Limit

Mohammadjavad Dowran

The ultimate sensitivity of any optically based measurement using classical resources (for example, laser or thermal light) is constrained by the photon shot noise limit (SNL). However, quantum states of light, in which photon pairs have quantum correlations or entanglement, off er a path beyond this limit. In particular, “squeezing” in these quantum states makes it possible to lower the noise in the detection system below the SNL. This can signifi cantly enhance the sensitivity of real-world devices and could thus revolutionize optical-based sensing applications

Quantum-enhanced plasmonic sensing

Mohammadjavad Dowran, Ashok Kumar, Benjamin J. Lawrie +2 more

Quantum resources can enhance the sensitivity of a device beyond the classical shot noise limit and, as a result, revolutionize the field of metrology through the development of quantum-enhanced sensors. In particular, plasmonic sensors, which are widely used in biological and chemical sensing applications, offer a unique opportunity to bring such an enhancement to real-life devices. Here, we use bright entangled twin beams to enhance the sensitivity of a plasmonic sensor used to measure local changes in refractive index. We demonstrate a 56% quantum enhancement in the sensitivity of state-of-the-art plasmonic sensor with measured sensitivities on the order of $10^{-10}$RIU$/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$, nearly 5 orders of magnitude better than previous proof-of-principle implementations of quantum-enhanced plasmonic sensors. These results promise significant enhancements in ultratrace label free plasmonic sensing and will find their way into areas ranging from biomedical applications to chemical detection.

Quantum Plasmonic Sensors

Changhyoup Lee, Benjamin Lawrie, Raphael Pooser +3 more

The extraordinary sensitivity of plasmonic sensors is well-known in the optics and photonics community. These sensors exploit simultaneously the enhancement and the localization of electromagnetic fields close to the interface between a metal and a dielectric. This enables, for example, the design of integrated biochemical sensors at scales far below the diffraction limit. Despite their practical realization and successful commercialization, the sensitivity and associated precision of plasmonic sensors are starting to reach their fundamental classical limit given by quantum fluctuations of light-known as the shot-noise limit. To improve the sensing performance of these sensors beyond the classical limit, quantum resources are increasingly being employed. This area of research has become known as "quantum plasmonic sensing", and it has experienced substantial activity in recent years for applications in chemical and biological sensing. This review aims to cover both plasmonic and quantum techniques for sensing, and it shows how they have been merged to enhance the performance of plasmonic sensors beyond traditional methods. We discuss the general framework developed for quantum plasmonic sensing in recent years, covering the basic theory behind the advancements made, and describe the important works that made these advancements. We also describe several key works in detail, highlighting their motivation, the working principles behind them, and their future impact. The intention of the review is to set a foundation for a burgeoning field of research that is currently being explored out of intellectual curiosity and for a wide range of practical applications in biochemistry, medicine, and pharmaceutical research.
