The isotropic N-vector model in random magnetic fields

Abstract

We have investigated the dynamics of the isotropic N-vector model with long-range exchange couplings in random magnetic fields using a 1/N expansion. The leading order is exactly solved, showing the existence of a ferromagnetic phase separated from the disordered paramagnetic phase by a line. The critical behaviour of the system has been examined in the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion, showing that the critical exponents are by no means related to the ones of the pure system in d-2 dimensions. The ordered phase has been also investigated in the next-to-leading order, revealing a typical Goldstone behaviour of the non time-persistent part of the transverse fluctuations. For the longitudinal fluctuations, two different types of coexistence singularities emerge, one from the non time-persistent (as in the pure systems), vanishing with the temperature, and a more divergent one from the time-persistent part of the correlation.

Goldstone singularities and critical behaviour in isotropic systems

Hans-O Heuer

The critical behaviour along the coexistence curve of isotropic ferromagnets is characterized by two diverging correlation lengths since longitudinal and transverse fluctuations of the order parameter become critical. Therefore, a critical theory valid for the whole phase diagram has to incorporate the crossover between a region characterized by one correlation length to another region where two different correlation lengths dominate. Treating this crossover problem entirely within the framework of the trajectory integral method. The author has calculated the equation of state and the susceptibilities. It is shown that coexistence behaviour is governed by a coexistence fixed point which is characterized by the vanishing interaction among the Goldstone modes. Taking the coupling of the critical transverse modes to the longitudinal modes into account, it is shown that coexistence behaviour is characterized by a Fisher renormalization. This central result sheds new light on the symmetry-broken phase in isotropic systems. The asymptotic forms of the equation of state and the susceptibilities at the coexistence curve are expressed by the specific heat exponent alpha t =1/2 for d>or=3 and for all spin dimensions. These results are in perfect agreement with the nonlinear sigma -model. The crossover from coexistence curve behaviour to ordinary critical behaviour is calculated for the equation of state and for the susceptibilities to O( in )( in =4-d).

Slow dynamics in critical ferromagnetic vector models relaxing from a magnetized initial state

Pasquale Calabrese, Andrea Gambassi

Within the universality class of ferromagnetic vector models with O( n ) symmetry and purely dissipative dynamics, we study the non-equilibrium critical relaxation from a magnetized initial state. Transverse correlation and response functions are exactly computed for Gaussian fluctuations and in the limit of infinite number n of components of the order parameter. We find that the fluctuation–dissipation ratios (FDRs) for longitudinal and transverse modes differ already at the Gaussian level. In these two exactly solvable cases we completely describe the crossover from the short-time to the long-time behaviour, corresponding to a disordered and a magnetized initial condition, respectively. The effects of non-Gaussian fluctuations on longitudinal and transverse quantities are calculated in the first order in the -expansion ( = 4− d ) and reliable three-dimensional estimates of the two FDRs are obtained.

Long-range random-field models: scaling theory and 1/n expansion

Alan J. Bray

Random-field models are considered with long-range exchange, J(r) approximately 1/r d+ sigma , and/or long-range correlated random fields, (h(r)h(r')) approximately 1/ mod r-r' mod d- rho . A general scaling analysis is presented, in which the existence of three independent critical exponents is emphasized. Four different universality classes are identified, according to whether the fixed point controlling the critical behaviour is of short-range or long-range character for the exchange and/or the random-field correlations. The lines in the rho - sigma plane at which the long-range couplings first become relevant are expressed in terms of the exponents eta and eta of the corresponding short-range problem: long-range exchange is relevant for sigma <2- eta , long-range field correlations for rho >2 eta - eta . The scaling results are confirmed and amplified by explicit calculations of three independent exponents of the n-component spin model, correct to order 1/n. The results reveal errors in published expansions around the upper critical dimension.

THE AGING BEHAVIOR OF THE RANDOM n-VECTOR MODEL WITH LONG-RANGE INTERACTION

Yuan Chen

The aging behavior of the random n-vector model with long-range interaction decaying as r-(d+σ) (where d is the dimensionality), is investigated by the theoretic renormalization-group approach. The system initially disordered at a high temperature is firstly quenched to the critical temperature T c and then released to an evolution with model A dynamics. The aging properties are studied by the short-time expansions. The scaling behavior of two-time response and correlation functions are obtained in a frame of the expansion in ∊ = 2σ-d. In dimensions d < 2σ, the long-time limit of the critical fluctuation dissipation ratio X∞ is calculated up to one-loop order. The simulation of X∞ is discussed.
