Correlations and entanglement in Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract

Our group in Palaiseau has been perfecting techniques for creating and analyzing correlated pairs of particles created through non-linear processes in BECs. We have been studying both correlated phonons via the dynamical Casimir effect as well as correlated atoms via a process analogous to four-wave mixing. I will discuss the experimental techniques and some of our latest results.

Amplifying the Hawking Signal in BECs

Roberto Balbinot, Alessandro Fabbri

We consider simple models of Bose-Einstein condensates to study analog pair-creation effects, namely, the Hawking effect from acoustic black holes and the dynamical Casimir effect in rapidly time-dependent backgrounds. We also focus on a proposal by Cornell to amplify the Hawking signal in density-density correlators by reducing the atoms’ interactions shortly before measurements are made.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations from colliding Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose an experiment which can demonstrate quantum correlations in a physical scenario as discussed in the seminal work of Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen. Momentum-entangled massive particles are produced via the four-wave mixing process of two colliding Bose-Einstein condensates. The particles' quantum correlations can be shown in a double--double-slit experiment or via ghost interference.
