Collapse suppression in Bose-Einstein condensate clouds with orbital angular momentum

Jasur A. Abdullaev, Anton S. Desyatnikov, Elena A. Ostrovskaya

In this work we explore, theoretically and numerically, the influence of the OAM on the dynamics and suppression of collapse of trapped matter waves with attractive interatomic interaction. We demonstrate that a radially-symmetric harmonic trap can support elliptically shaped rotating clouds of ultracold atoms which exhibit a collapse-free dynamically stable evolution with the number of particles greatly exceeding the threshold for radially-symmetric fundamental state of the trap. To achieve the suppression of collapse, one needs to increase ellipticity of the trapped state and its rotation (spiraling) velocity, by transferring orbital angular momentum to the matter wave, e.g. imprinting a twisted phase front onto an elliptic BEC cloud. As a result, the critical number of atoms for the collapse raises and the BEC cloud exhibits long-term dynamically stable behavior. The results of numerical simulations are in agreement with the modified collapse threshold for the elliptic BEC states with OAM, predicted by variational analysis.

Prime number factorization with light beams carrying orbital angular momentum

Xiaofei Li, Xin Liu, Quanying Wu +4 more

We point out a link between orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying light beams and number theory. The established link makes it possible to formulate and implement a simple and ultrafast protocol for prime number factorization by employing OAM endowed beams that are modulated by a prime number sieve. We are able to differentiate factors from non-factors of a number by simply measuring the on-axis intensity of light in the rear focal plane of a thin lens focusing on a source beam. The proposed protocol solely relies on the periodicity of the OAM phase distribution, and hence, it is applicable to fully as well as partially coherent fields of any frequency and physical nature—from optical or x-ray to matter waves—endowed with OAM. Our experimental results are in excellent agreement with our theory. We anticipate that our protocol will trigger new developments in optical cryptography and information processing with OAM beams.
