Partially coherent matter wave soliton solutions: Multimode approach

Jun Chen, Qiang Lin

We introduce a multimode approach to describe the partially coherent matter wave(PCMW) and construct a set of localized soliton solutions of the one-dimensional multimode nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic lattice potential and a periodic interaction potential. Based on our analytical expression of the multimode PCMW, we investigate the density distribution and coherence property of a two-mode case.

Modal decomposition of a propagating matter wave via electron ptychography

Shaohong Cao, Pieter Kok, Peng Li +2 more

We employ ptychography, a phase-retrieval imaging technique, to show experimentally that a partially coherent high-energy matter (electron) wave emanating from an extended source can be decomposed into a set of mutually independent modes of minimal rank. Partial coherence significantly determines the optical transfer properties of an electron microscope and so there has been much work on this subject. However, previous studies have employed forms of interferometry to determine spatial coherence between discrete points in the wave field. Here we use the density matrix to derive a formal quantum mechanical description of electron ptychography and use it to measure a full description of the spatial coherence of a propagating matter wave field, at least within the fundamental uncertainties of the measurements we can obtain.

Nonlinear evolution of the interacting Gaussian-shaped Matter Waves

Jun Chen, Zhang Zhang, Yunxian Liu +1 more

The nonlinear evolution of a Gaussian-shaped matter wave with weak interaction among atoms is investigated analytically. An effective complex curvature is introduced to describe the interacting matter wave, and the evolution formula of the effective complex curvature is derived. The conditions under which the analytic formula can be used are presented. As an example, focusing of a coherent matter wave with the repulsive interaction among atoms is calculated and analyzed. The evolution characteristics of the matter wave with and without interactions are compared and discussed.
