Abstract

An experimental setup designed to store light pulses inside a cesium vapor cell by employing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is described. Probe laser pulses containing ∼ 10 photons per pulse are delayed through the EIT effect.

Electromagnetically induced transparency experiments in cesium vapor—Towards single photon operation

David Höckel, Matthias Scholz, Oliver J. Benson +1 more

We describe first results with an experimental setup designed to store light pulses of ultra low intensity inside a cesium vapor cell by employing the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency. A phase‐locked laser system is used as pump and probe laser and probe laser pulses of Gauβian shape are delayed by up to 280 ns. We outline the route to single photon operation of the setup, in particular by introducing a novel filtering concept.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Cesium Vapor with Probe Pulses on the Single-Photon Level

David Höckel, Oliver J. Benson

We perform electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) experiments in cesium vapor with pulses on the single-photon level for the first time. This was made possible by an extremely large total suppression of the EIT coupling beam by 118 dB mainly due to a newly developed triple-pass planar Fabry-Pérot etalon filter. Slowing and shaping of single-photon light pulses as well as the generation of pulses suitable for quantum key distribution applications and testing of approaches for single photon storage is demonstrated. Our results extend single-photon EIT to the particularly interesting wavelength of the Cs D1 line.

Optimizing stored light efficiency in vapor cells

Irina V. Novikova, Mason Klein, David F. Phillips +1 more

We present a preliminary experimental study of slow and stored light in Rb vapor cells under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We study the efficiency of light storage as a function of pulse duration, storage time, retrieval field intensity, etc. We demonstrate that atomic diffusion in-and-out of the laser beam plays an important role not well described by previous analysis.

Electromagnetically induced transparency using a vapor cell and a laser-cooled sample of cesium atoms

J. J. Clarke, William Arie van Wijngaarden, Hongxin Chen

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) was observed in a mismatched-wavelength cascade system using a room temperature vapor cell and laser-cooled atoms. A cw probe laser beam monitored the cesium ${6S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{6P}_{3/2}$ transition while another cw laser coupled the ${6P}_{3/2}$ state to a higher excited state. The ratio of the observed Rabi frequencies for coupling to the ${6P}_{3/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(11--{13)D}_{3/2,5/2}$ transitions agreed closely with that predicted using the transition oscillator strengths. A comparison of the EIT signals obtained using cold atoms and the vapor cell is made.

Observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in cesium molecules

Hebin Li, H. Chen, M A Gubin +3 more

We have studied electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in diatomic cesium molecules in a vapor cell by using tunable diode lasers. We have observed a sub-natural Λ-resonance in absorption molecular band B 1Π u − X 1Σ g + at different cesium vapor pressures. The width of the EIT resonance shows a linear dependence on a cesium vapor pressure.
