Abstract

Multiple pulse generation from a dipole-ordered state is predicted, which can be achieved by local state manipulation of an N two-level system interacting with localized photons. The origins of the phenomenon are discussed by comparison with Dicke's superradiance.

Base-Independent Photon Entanglement in Superradiance of Multilevel Atoms

Amir Sivan, Meir Orenstein

We propose realization of sources of multiphoton entanglement from atomic ensembles via a fast and deterministic superradiance process [1]. We leverage the collective emission phenomenon of superradiance in order to generate multiphoton states, and entangle them in their frequency degree of freedom by incorporating the dynamics of multilevel atoms. Such deterministic high-yield sources of entangled photons are crucial for applications pertaining to quantum computation, quantum communications and quantum metrology [2]. We emphasize that the original Dicke superradiance model [3] and its extensions have only dealt with the atomic-ensemble entanglement and photonic ensemble-average observables such as intensity and autocorrelation, and photonic entanglement in superradiance has never been considered.

Single-photon modulation by the collective emission of an atomic chain

Zeyang Liao, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

We study the collective spontaneous emission of a linear atomic chain excited by a single photon. The interaction between the atoms and the common vacuum field can significantly change the eigenenergy and the spontaneous emission rate of the system. Due to the dipole-dipole interactions, the system prepared in a single-photon timed Dicke state is the superposition of superradiant and subradiant eigenstates that can have a nonexponential decay dynamics. We can tune the frequency and linewidth of the superradiant and subradiant emission from a timed Dicke state by changing the direction of the atomic dipole moment or the atomic separation. In addition, the emission direction of the superradiant and subradiant photons also depends on the polarization of the atoms.

Initiation of Superradiance from Different Collective-Spin States

Adnan Alabbar, Zhenghao Zhang, Girish S. Agarwal

Superradiance is an extensive cooperative spontaneous emission phenomenon, exhibited by some atomic collective-spin states. However, distinct initial states differ in their decay dynamics. Dicke states $|j,m\rangle$ with distinct numbers of excitations $n=m+j$, driven by vacuum fluctuations, have their peak emission intensity shifted in time. Rotating Dicke states relative to the decay axis introduces an interesting parity structure that affects the pulse profile and photon correlations. Squeezed-bath prepared states undergo a squeezing-controlled crossover to the rotated Dicke states, making the emission character dependent on the amount of squeezing transferred from light to the atomic state. For semiclassical states with a macroscopic dipole moment, like the atomic coherent state, the emission intensity depends on their polarization. We present detailed results on the superradiant dynamics of a representative selection of states expanded in Dicke states to highlight the initial state as an independent dynamical control parameter. For large-$N$, we are able to predict fairly accurately the pulse profile in each case using the mean-field approximation, an approach based on the Fokker--Planck equation. We also present comparative results on the intensity correlation function, quantify the coherent and incoherent contributions of the emission, and contrast between small and large ensembles.

Influence of local-field effects on the dynamics of superradiance by a dense medium

Anatoli V. Andreev, P. V. Polevoy, Charles M. Bowden +1 more

The theory of superradiance by an ensemble of two-level atoms embedded in a dielectric host is developed. It is shown that the near dipole-dipole interaction of a dense collection of two-level atoms is enhanced by the presence of the host material, decreasing the pulse temporal width and increasing the peak pulse intensity of superradiative emission. The influence of the inversion-dependent detuning effect on the parameters of the emitted pulses is investigated.
