Pauli limited d-wave superconductors: quantum breached pair phase and thermal transitions

Madhuparna Karmakar

We report a quantum phase transition in Pauli limited d-wave superconductors and give the mean field estimates of the associated quantum critical point. For a population imbalanced d-wave superconductor a stable ground state phase viz quantum breached pair phase has been identified which comprises of spatial coexistence of gapless superconductivity and nonzero magnetization. Based on the thermodynamic and quasiparticle indicators we for the first time analyze this phase, discuss the thermal behavior of Pauli limited d-wave superconductor, give accurate estimates of the thermal scales associated with such systems and map out the pseudogap regime. Our work shows that while the Pauli limited superconductors are known to exhibit exotic modulated superconducting phase at large imbalance of fermion populations; in the regime of weak imbalance an intriguing phase of competing orders is realized. We have established that rather than the superconducting pairing field, it is the average magnetization of the system that quantifies this quantum phase transition. Given that the existing Pauli limited superconductors possess unconventional pairing state symmetry of the superconducting order, our work promises to open up new avenues in the experimental research of these materials. We have also demonstrated an alternate scenario wherein the quantum breached pair phase is a natural outcome for a d-wave superconductor with unequal effective masses of the fermion species.

Order-parameter symmetry and mode-coupling effects at dirty superconducting quantum phase transitions

Rastko Sknepnek, Thomas Vojta, Rajesh Narayanan

We derive an order-parameter field theory for a quantum phase transition between a disordered metal and an exotic (non-$s$-wave) superconductor. Mode coupling effects between the order parameter and other fermionic soft modes lead to an effective long-range interaction between the anomalous density fluctuations which is reflected in singularities in the free energy functional. However, this long-range interaction is not strong enough to suppress disorder fluctuations. The asymptotic critical region is characterized by run-away flow to large disorder. For weak coupling, this asymptotic region is very narrow. It is preempted by a wide crossover regime with mean-field critical behavior and, in the $p$-wave case, logarithmic corrections to scaling in all dimensions.

Subgap two-particle spectral weight in disordered s -wave superconductors: Insights from mode coupling approach

Prathyush Poduval, Abhisek Samanta, Prashant Kumar Gupta +2 more

We study the two-particle spectral functions and collective modes of weakly disordered superconductors using a disordered attractive Hubbard model on a square lattice. We show that the disorder-induced scattering between collective modes leads to a finite subgap spectral weight in the long-wavelength limit. In general, the spectral weight is distributed between the phase and the Higgs channels, but as we move towards half filling the Higgs contribution dominates. The inclusion of the density fluctuations lowers the frequency at which this mode occurs and results in the phase channel gaining a larger contribution to this subgap mode. Near half filling, the proximity of the system to the charge density wave instability leads to strong fluctuations of the effective disorder at the commensurate wave vector ($[\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}]$). We develop an analytical mode coupling approach where the pure Goldstone mode in the long-wavelength limit couples to the collective mode at $[\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}]$. This provides insight into the location and distribution of the two-particle spectral weights between the Higgs and the phase channels.
