Finite temperature effects in trapped Fermi gases with population imbalance

Chih-Chun Chien, Qijin Chen, Yan He +1 more

We study the finite temperature $T$ behavior of trapped Fermi gases as they undergo BCS--Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, in the presence of a population imbalance. Our results, in qualitative agreement with recent experiments, show how the superfluid phase transition is directly reflected in the particle density profiles. We demonstrate that at $T\ensuremath{\ne}0$ and in the near-BEC and unitary regimes, the polarization is excluded from the superfluid core. Importantly, a substantial polarization fraction is carried by a normal region of the trap having strong pair correlations, which we associate with noncondensed pairs or the ``pseudogap phase.''

Strongly-interacting Fermi gases with population imbalance

Mark Ku

This thesis presents a theoretical study of strongly-interacting Fermi systems with population imbalance, which is motivated by some differences in cold atoms experiments. We calculate the energy of a single fermion interacting resonantly with a Fermi sea of different species fermions in anisotropic traps, and show that finite particle numbers and the trap geometry impact the phase structure and the critical polarization, the limit of resonance superfluidity in traps. Our findings contribute to understanding some experimental discrepancies as finite-size and confinement effects. For an imbalanced gas in the uniform system, we calculate the energy of adding an impurity, and construct the equation of state of the partially-polarized normal Fermi liquid. Finally, we study the properties of a spin-down polaron in a trapped gas containing arbitrary numbers of spin-up and spin-down fermions, and derive a self-consistent equation for the polaron energy.

Single-particle properties of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture with mass and population imbalance

Koki Manabe, Daisuke Inotani, Yoji Ohashi

We theoretically investigate strong-coupling properties of a Bose-Fermi mixture. In the mass- and population-balanced case, two of the authors have shown that a strong heteropairing interaction in this mixture brings about coupling phenomena between Fermi atomic excitations and Bose atomic and composite molecular excitations, that appear as an anomalous multiple peak structure in the single-particle spectral weight (SW) [Kharga, Inotani, Hanai, and Ohashi, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 86, 084301 (2017)]. In this paper, we show that, although these many-body phenomena are sensitive to mass and population imbalances between the Bose and Fermi components, SW still exhibits the multiple peak structure in moderately mass-imbalanced $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ and $^{23}\mathrm{Na}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ mixtures. We also point out that the photoemission spectrum is a useful quantity to observe this spectral anomaly. Since a real trapped Bose-Fermi mixture is usually accompanied by mass and (local) population imbalances, our results would contribute to the study of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture, under realistic imbalanced conditions.
